Fishtown adventure

(featuring Kathy as my all-time-fav model)

We chose Fishtown for our Eat and Explore assignment without knowing that it is the furthest neighborhood in the list. I didn’t realize it until I got on the SEPTA train and noticed that it was my longest train trip in Philly. Nevertheless, we arrived in Fishtown in only 30 minutes.

Our first destination was Sulimays because we were hungry. However, on our way there we wandered around and took a lot of pictures, most of them are us posing in front of doors and walls (we were so in love with their colors!). I noticed every house has some kinds of fish symbols/signs, which is funny and fascinating at the same time.

The food in Sulimays was BRILLIANT, though my dish was too big I couldn’t finish it. What a shame :(

We then got on the street wandering aimlessly to find the murals and fish trashcans (and luckily we found them yayyy). I can really feel the soul of art on every street we passed by. We even found a small gallery by accident and it turned out to be much better than I expected. They had all the kinds of paintings, crafts and metal sculptures in the gallery despite its small size. Safia wanted to buy a necklace for her mother but unfortunately they could not take credit card, so we all left our contact there. It was a spontaneous decision to enter the gallery but luckily the visit was amazing.

Our last destination is the Greensgrow Farm, where I touched my first ever pine tree!! The place was a seasonal market with Christmas decorations of all kinds. That was my first time going to a Christmas market like this, and I love the festive atmosphere there so much I almost bought a little pine tree back to the dorm.

On our way back, we passed by a little playground and met a cute little girl who proudly claimed: “I’m five and a half years old” (Safia told her that she was like a fireman but turned out she was not, she was just five and a half)

Our trip ended with all of us feeling so satisfied and happy. We will definitely return to Fishtown one more time to find all the murals we could not see on our way, especially one called the Token Squirrel - a squirrel eating a SEPTA coin.

This book was titled Otis Kaye: Money, Mystery, and Mastery, by the New Britain Museum of American Art. I was browsing in the books on painting section when this caught my eye because of the front cover, which is an actual piece by Kaye called D’-JIA-VU? that shows painted bills of currency. The book was published alongside an exhibition, so it is kind of a catalogue of Kaye’s work and his life as an American Trompe l’oeil painter and artist who mastered many genres. This book is interesting to me as an Art History major because this is a different genre of painting and artwork, and viewing the way Kaye explores different mediums and subjects is interesting and refreshing. - Lara Bros

The Eyes of the City by Richard Sandler is book of street photography taken in Boston and New York City. The book caught my eye on the shelf from being black with white lettering. Inside is some of the Sandler’s best snapshots he had taken in the two cities. It has a wide verity of people that he had seen while walking around. His photos compare other people's stories while also making new ones. - Sara Latta

Avedon: 1944-2000 Fashion

I found the book while looking through the oversized photography books, and it caught my eye because of Avedon’s well respected name. My interest is mainly in the subject line, fashion photography, and I know Richard Avedon is an amazing photographer and I’d like to know more about his work. I’d recommend this book to anyone trying to get to know more about fashion photography, both in and outside of a studio setting. Avedon is a master at capturing the emotional feeling of a scene and this book is full of extraordinary photos that do just that. - David Novick

What inspired you to choose Graphic Design as your major?

Ever since I can remember I have always been inclined to art. Whenever I saw a blank page it had to be drawn on. Throughout grade school I took art classes in and outside of school. This then led me to be an art major all four years of my high school career. I knew when picking my major I wanted to have some type of career in art. I picked graphic design because my cousin, Marissa, is a graphic designer and I love all of her work and projects she does for companies. She is one of my biggest role models and I hope to follow in her footsteps.

Last Assignment Ever (Activity Follow-Up)

Last week we got to interview a few juniors and seniors, and I’d have to say it was really fun! The most helpful advice I got was probably on the co-op questions. The information they gave me made me feel a little bit better on the subject and less stressful about any ambiguity with it. I mean, it’s still a little iffy (since I’m not really at that stage yet), but I’m less nervous about it than I was before. It’s kind of nerve-wracking knowing I’m going to be that stressed later on, but the advice everyone gave was that you learn how to deal with that kind of stress and just work with it. And I think that was the best advice of all.

I’m really glad I got to take this course--it was so much fun and I learned a lot of stuff that I probably wouldn’t have been able to know all on my own. I’m glad I got to be a part of it, and hopefully I’ll be able to remember everything for next term!

Activity Follow-Up

The activity on Thursday was very interesting and excites me for my future classes as I continue my studies. Talking with upperclassmen about their experiences in graphic design was fun, and I enjoyed it. I got to see some students’ portfolios, as well as listen about other students’ co-op experiences. I learned a lot, especially about the processes that go into making designs, and in co-op experiences, like the co-op class, as well as interviews, etc. I overall enjoyed talking with the upperclassmen and can’t wait to experience everything the graphic design program has to offer.

Activity Follow-up

We were to, in groups, talk to some juniors and seniors. I thought it was very informative. We went over how our freshman year is going, we talked about how co-op is like, and some of the future projects that the graphic designers had to do. The information I learned when we went over co-op was very helpful. The seniors said that they had about 3 interviews in a day and a total of 12 interviews. When I heard this I got overwhelmed and it got me nervous for the future, but the seniors said its actually not that bad once you get the hang of it. I also thought the projects that the juniors/seniors did were really cool. They showed us some books they had hand sewn and illustrated. It got me really excited for future classes and projects. At the same time I get worried that I won't be able to make something that great. They said that it may seem overwhelming but once the day comes where you are assigned the project you will be ready and the professor will be there to help you. In conclusion, I am excited for future classes and projects and the co-op program.
