INSIDER INFORMATION ON FITNESS EMPLOYMENT AT COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES:

When most people think of employment in the fitness industry, the first thing that pops into their heads is a commercial gym.  And there’s certainly no shortage of jobs in that environment.  But many employment opportunities exist for fitness professionals in another environment: colleges and universities. Matt Brzycki knows this all too well.  Matt is a former USMC Drill Instructor, a VFCC Team Member, and the Assistant Director of Campus Recreation, Fitness at Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey.  Matt’s been employed at universities since 1983.  At the end of Matt’s four-year enlistment in 1979, he enrolled at a branch campus of Penn State.  About seven months into his freshman year, he scored his first civilian job which as a fitness trainer at a commercial gym.  After graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education in 1983, he got a job as a Health & Fitness Supervisor at Princeton University. “It was a classic case of being in the right spot at the right time”, says Matt. About 15 months later, Matt moved over to Rutgers University as the Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach.  Matt remained in this position for nearly six years before returning for a second tour at Princeton University where he’s been since 1990. There are a variety of fitness-related jobs at colleges and universities.  To begin with, just about every school employs one or more strength coaches.  Some schools have a single strength coach who oversees all varsity sports.  Many schools have multiple strength coaches who are responsible for specific sports such as football and basketball.  And many strength coaches have a staff of one or more assistants. Additionally, there is the often overlooked opportunity of managing the college and university campus fitness (or wellness) centers which are used by the general student population and faculty/staff.  And, at the larger schools, there is often more than one fitness center on campus which opens up even more job opportunities. Finally, if you’re not seeking a job in fitness management, there are other opportunities at colleges and universities to work as a personal trainer, fitness (“floor”) supervisor, and/or group-exercise instructor.
