Happy first day of spring!
We’re celebrating the vernal equinox here in the Northern Hemisphere with this image of lyonnaise silk from La Librairie (1900), from l’exoposition universelle internationale de 1900.
• Universal Exposition, Paris. 536. Set of Italian statues, stereograph (Exposition universelle, Paris. 536. Ensemble de statues Italiennes) Date: 1867 Designer: M. Léon& J. Lévoy (Paris) Medium: Albumen silver photograph
Spring of ‘67
On this day, 50 years ago, Expo 67 opened in Montreal and would last until November of the same year. It is, to this day the most successful and most attended World’s Fair ever organized (although a computer program predicted it could not open on time!)
Amongst the fair-goers were Queen Elizabeth II, Canadian Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson, Marlene Dietrich, Jackie Kennedy, Thelonious Monk, Prince Rainier of Monaco, Princess Grace of Monaco and their eldest children, Prince Albert and Princess Caroline, Harry Bellafonte, Princess Margaret and US President Lyndon B. Johnson... to name a few.
