Rant Time

So I am re-watching The Newsroom from HBO. And seriously, if you have not watched this and are at all concerned about today's media and how it portrays the news, please please please watch this it is so powerful. The first 5 minutes are probably the best beginning to a tv show, ever. His rant about America is so right on, it's actually really scary. We aren't the greatest country anymore, but instead are the most ignorant of our own perception. Other country hates us because we portray ourselves as the great US of A with freedom and opportunity and with the American dream of making it big. But when in reality, if you really take a look at our laws and our everyday works within our country, we are really aren't that "great". We are just little thirteen year olds proclaiming whatever makes us look good to everybody else around us. Yes, we have some freedom, but we aren't the only ones. A quote from the frist rant of "The Newsroom", "250 independent countries, and 180 of them have 'freedom'." But we profess ourselves that we have all these great freedoms, but they aren't entirely what they were 50 years ago. Back then, someone standing on a box or pedestal in the middle of a street was considered respected and admired. But now, they are considered the low of the low and even crazy. No one listens and no one cares. We have the right to speak out against whatever we please, but it seems to me the only ones really utilizing this is the Westburro Baptist Church protesting funerals of fallen soldiers and innocent victims of tragedies. Since when did freedom of speech in-tale hate speech on others rather than speaking out against what we feel is wrong, and to bring attention to the problems that we see is wrong. But even then, that's as far as our so called "freedom" stops. Because if we want to bring a change for a cause, would mean either treason or at the very very least calling our local politician. But don't even get me started on the corrupt political system we have in place. So yeah, we used to be this great country that strove to be the best our of pure morality sake. But take a look at what we really are today. Consumed with the materialism of the next iphone or the next big technology gaget. Distracted by what's going on in the lives of celebrities, instead of the real issues of corruption of our government and the unjustness going on in other countries abroad. We watch movies about superheroes saving a city or the country or the world. But no one stands up to be that superhero themselves. We just cower in the excuses we make for ourselves of why we don't help our neighbors or brothers and sisters of mankind. In the words of Will McAvoy of "The Newsroom", "We are not the greatest country in the world anymore.". WE CAN BE BETTER, BUT WE NEED TO TAKE THE FIRST STEP. To be human again.
