donny’s definitely built up an idealistic memory of what his ma was like --- she was always his favourite parent, and with his dad’s distance/disapproval he needed to cling onto the idea that someone once believed in his talent as much as he believes in it himself --- and june can never replace her, but she’s still everything donny could want in a mom. she thinks he’s talented ( at pmp she called him rachmaninoff and didn’t want him to stop playing ) she supports the band, both as a way for julia to get back out in the world again and just because it’s a good band, she laughs at his shitty jokes, she feeds him and brings him tea, and she wants him to stay. she’s warm, she understands the effects of war and how he’s fucked up from it, and the idea that he’s actually got a mom again ( a parent period, really ) is so overwhelming that there’s no way he can stop crying.

there’s at least one occasion where he goes to her for something you would go to your mom for, because she becomes more than just julia’s mother, but is part of his family.

( he always calls her mom and not ma, though, because ma was his mother. )
