A Journal by Aditya Wibowo London, April 2017 // Ah, Sherlock, the OG of private investigators. To be honest, i've never seen any of it movie or maybe it's tv series, but i've heard a lot of interesting things about him though. We went near Regent's Park, which known for the area of Sherlock. // As an "investigator" you need to really care about your surroundings. That's basically the first task given to us. We were split into 3 groups and as a group we need to observe what's around the park. To be honest though, it was pretty difficult. Because you don't really know what to pay our attention at. From the first glance, you look at something and thought that it might be a clue, then you start to questioning wether it's worth your attention or not. We stroll along the park and try to collect as many "signs" as possible. We were told to gather at the center of the park after we finish, that's where basically we are going to be asked questions about the clues spread around the park. Luckily, i got the best team!! Haha. In the first task, my team leads. The instructor said, by the end of the session, the highest point team will get a prize, ambitious mode on. // The second task was easier i guess, because we only need to find the answer based on clues given, and my team leads again. The third one was frisbee!! It was really fun, we were in the middle of a grass field where the air was so fresh and it was pretty much a retreat. We laugh, we had fun together. Last part is the best part, where one of the tasks was to pose as if we were a real detective. // We gathered in the same spot again as we were in the beginning to announce the best group and the best "detective". My team won! And what's more surprising, the instructor picked me as the best sherlock. It felt like i just won lottery (never had lottery though haha). They awarded me with some sherlock stuffs, like his hat, his magnifier, and his cigar(?). Although it wasn't the real stuff. I'm pretty proud of myself. The instructor even told me that i look like sherlock in my glasses. I'm just there like, sherlock who? Haha. // What i learned from this fun yet challenging course is that, you need to believe your instinct and also be more open to the surroundings around you.

Sherlock Whenever someone says detective, there are two things that pop out in my mind; Sherlock and magnifying glasses. Well, on 21st April, I get to be Sherlock for just one day. Our guide was John Adamson and he was with his friend named Hillary. At the beginning of the activity, he told us that today's winner gonna get Sherlock's "real" hat. Of course, that made me excited because who doesn't like free things? Right after, we were divided into three groups. And each groups were given the same mission which was observing the area that we're in which is the Regent's Park. Well, I didn't do much of a good job. For the second mission we were given a little booklet that had more stuff in it that we have to find and it was all about the objects that we can find in the park and this park was HUGE so we spent a lot of time doing this mission and surely, a lot of wandering around. And then the last mission were almost similar to the second one, we basically had a few things to do and these ones were more interactive because to actually finish the mission we had to interview strangers that were strolling around the park. In the end, our team didn't win but I didn't think about it too much because at the end everyone had a good time! (and chocolates). I feel that this workshop was super fun because we actually did it outdoors and we had more space that way and more freedom. I'm not sure if detective are my main passion because if I actually had to do this as a real life job I wouldn't enjoy it as much as I think.

A Journal by Aditya Wibowo London, April 2017 // Have you guys heard about The Guardian? No, not the pharmacy, but the Newspaper company. Apparently, The Guardian is the biggest paper company in the UK! It has 3 main offices, one in London which we visited today, the second one is in New York, and the third one is in Sydney, Australia. The main idea of putting the offices in those 3 areas is basically so there will be new stories in a day from every part of the world. Today, we had the chance to be the editor for the newspaper! // We were gathered in a room full of computers where we need to work in pair to make our own newspaper front page. We get the chance to feel what it feels like to work in a newspaper industry. We were given least amount of time to finish the most of tasks. It was pretty difficult but we managed to do it! // The first thing we did was to pick 5 stories for our front page, after that you do some edits for it, add picture, headlines, and other things! // I managed to impress the head editor with one of my title though! I did the article of Prince William who's going to hand out the number in London Marathon 2017. I gave the article title of "Prince Harry, more like Prince Hurry." The head editor praised me for my sense of humor in my title and she said that i'm going to be a good editor in magazine. // After that we had a tour around the office, the office was really huge, there was a lot of people working in there. We ended the tour with a presentation of work in the media world. It was pretty inspiring. // I enjoyed the whole experience, but i don't think i see myself working in the paper industry. But i sure will apply what i learned today, and improve the skill i currently have on writing.

A Journal by Aditya Wibowo London, April 20th 2017 // Chin up, elbow off the table, let the afternoon tea party begins. You wouldn't really be calling it as "afternoon tea" though, because we did it around 10 in the morning. We went to this very fancy hotel called Milestone Hotel, it was located in a very decent location. It gave me the feelings of Breakfast at Tiffany's. I've been waiting for this "table-manner" training for a long time, not because i'm a messy person on the table, it's because i just feel like people need to know more about the manner while enjoying their meal everyday. // Our instructor was Ms. Emma Dupond, she was a very classy lady! Look at the way she walks! She was looks like a very formal and also intellectual British lady. She started off the lesson with a pretty brief history on where "afternoon tea" originated. I was surprised when knowing that "afternoon tea" was a thing people do it in private back in the days. // Before we jumped into all of the tea and cookies, we needed to know how to talk and introduce yourself properly in Britain. The simple thing like the handshake and conversation amazed me. It was very simple yet sounds classy. Not only the greetings, we also learned what to talk about in a small talk, and what not to talk about for the first time. We also learned about social kisses which i rarely see it in Indonesia. Social kiss is similar to a kiss on the cheeks, but the difference is that there's no skin contact. // Time for the tea! Although we are 5 hours earlier than the usual afternoon tea, but it's okay. On table, there are two cake trays that each has 3 layers. The first layer is filled with sandwich while we drink tea. Once you've finished with the first layer, you can slowly move up to the next layer, but once you go forward, you can't go back. Second layer is scone, you need to break the scone in half and spread the cream and jam on top of it. Scone was very interesting! Because you have to eat it in half, not full size. The third layer is cake. It was a delight! // The lesson's finished and also our tea. Before we dismissed, the instructor commanded us to do a quick review of what we've done. I'm looking forward to apply what i've learned as soon as possible, most importantly while i'm back home in Indonesia, because i do think that Indonesians do need to learn some proper etiquette, just saying.

A Journal by Aditya Wibowo London, April 19th 2017 // The day has finally come, i can experience what it feels to be part of a forensic team. Yes, you heard me right, forensic, not a real one though, just another part of an experiential learning. It's called The CSI Experience. The CSI Experience is actually one of the main reasons why i joined this UnlockingYou Project at London. I've been very interested and eager to know more about being a real life CSI. Growing up, i watched a lot of criminal-ish vibe tv series. From Dexter, and my most favorite is obviously CSI (yes, i watched the whole 3 CSI franchises) I wouldn't mind watching CSI when they're examining a dead body's limbs while i'm eating my dinner. My family swore by me to stop watching the show while we eat. Well sorry, it's not my fault that the program airs the same time we eat dinner. // Today's activity took place at lift building. The building was sort of hidden, so we missed it at first. We went to the top floor at the Angel Room. Inside the room, there was already a crime scene set up for us to make it look more realistic. So basically, the activity divided us into 4 groups that will work at 4 different tasks each time. The first table was "fingerprint analysis" (where i sat down at first), the second one was "footprint analysis", the third one was "crime scene analysis" and the last one were "substance analysis" and also "blood spatter analysis". // The first task we do was the fingerprint analysis. The instructor, Ms. Michaela gave us instruction on what to do and how to do it. What we needed to do was to analyze the fingerprint from the bottle, and match it with the sample database available. But sadly, we didn't really get any clue because our fingerprints are basically messed up haha. // So every team has to change table each time the instructor told us to change. Our second table was to find evidence based on the footprint trace left behind in the crime scene. Based on the evidence and the footprint sample, we concluded that the footprint belongs to Kerrie. // We moved to the third table, which our task was to decide which evidence should be considered as primary and need to be collected first. It was kind of tricky because everything looks important to us. But the instructor gave us note, which is to take things that might contains DNA first. // Last table got us divided into 2 activities, which were recreating blood splatter and also identifying sample which might contain bloods. I did the Blood one, it was kind of easy because what you need to do was only dropping some substance in order, and if it contains blood the cotton bud will turn pink. // Based on the evidences, my group concluded that Kerri is the killer. It was really fun, since i've been looking for doing this forensic type of activity after watching the show CSI. I enjoyed the whole activity, but i don't think i will be doing it as a job in the future.

Public Speaking ala TED Ever since I came to London I've lost track of time and date, and I actually had to open the Calendar app to see what date it is today because I wanted to start my journal in a cool way of how travellers do because they always put dates on the beginning of the journal, but I already failed that. On Sunday, 16th of April we had a lesson of Public Speaking with one of the TED speakers named James Evans- which by the way, he was really great at drawing attention to the audience. We did a lot today and James was really good at engaging conversations with the audience and we did activities with groups and pairing. He explained everything about public speaking, starting from the myths that people believe about being good at public speaking and even to the extent of how you can maximize the climax of your speaking to get your message across to the audience. Throughout the whole session, I was feeling very interested in the topic in all its about. And what drew me in the most was how James himself was talking to us students because since he is such an experienced speaker he managed to not make anyone in the room sleep and actually pay attention to what information he's giving to us. I also felt really helped and definitely gained more knowledge not only from James, but from my seniors because we had a session where we had to work in pairs and our partner has to be someone in a different grade and obviously, being paired with someone who was way more better in speaking English than I do and actually had her own perspective and shared to me about it, was super duper helpful. What I learned from this activity is how a public speech is structured and ways to actually turn your nervous energy on stage into something that the audience would enjoy (for example: walking around the stage, more hand gestures, etc). What I definitely didn't know before was how there are trials to reach the actual core message that you're trying to spread and actually reach the climax and each trials gradually goes upward and reach more complexity in its content. From this activity I can definitely tell that I'll be more prepared if I had to do public speaking, considerig how in the UK if you want to get accepted in college you have to be well at it, and also James informed us that public speaking is one of a great aspect that a company can grow out so I'll definitely be taking more parts in public speaking in the future.
