Traversing A City : A List
Objects to have handy :
A durable, small and well-fitted bag (preferably nondescript)
A nice pen
A commonplace book (for notes and journaling)
An apple, or other small snack
Elegant and good-quality camera
Discreet map
Lip balm
On your person :
Comfortable shirt topped with a breathable jacket
Common sense jeans
Sensible (yet not extravagantly so) shoes
Overall be conscious of being quiet and unnoticed. The best citywalker is the unseen citywalker. You are the man writing in the corner of the cafe that all the loud tourists bypass. You are the woman observing the ducks in the lake, safely ensconced in the nook by the bridge. You are the girl waiting for the next train to come, noting down the different shades of slate present in the tunnel walls.
If you feel that someone is watching you, leave immediately and discreetly. Change your clothes (take off the jacket and leave it somewhere secure - doubtless you have many private cubbyholes throughout the metropolis) and retreat to the nearest skyscraper. The first custodian you see with a smart cap ought to be trustworthy. To test them, ask "Excuse me, ma'am/sir, but could you direct me to the venerable Mr. Owens?" If they answer with the correct reply, explain your situation and follow their advice. I shall see you at the next refuge, Oliver. Until then, good luck.
