There’s a lot of reasons Melaina doesn’t like Sirius but nearly all of them are secondary to the fact that he wasn’t loyal to his family. He ran away from home. He did what is the worst act imaginable in Melaina’s mind and if she could have nothing to do with him for the rest of her life then she wouldn’t. Unfortunately, that’s not possible. She’s incredibly frustrated that she has ended up being the one ‘landed’ with him, as she sees it. She wants to believe it might work out okay, that at the end of the day he’s still pure of blood and everybody is redeemable but she doesn’t know how to trust someone who abandoned their family like that. She definitely doesn’t want to end up married to someone who values his muggleborn friends over her. She knows the betrothal was a decision made out of desperation from each of their parents but that her father fully intended to get her out of it as soon as he found a better match. Now that he’s been arrested, Melaina doesn’t know what to do. She reckons Walburga will only let her put off planning because of her father not being around for so long and she’s carefully cultivated this image as the perfect pureblood daughter which means she can’t be the one to call the betrothal off. She’s hoping Sirius will come through and ruin it all on his own, because she feels that seems to be what he’s good at doing.
