(for the unpopular opinion asks) fanfics (especially hannibal ones) that attempt to smooth over all the issues presented in the show (e.g. just taking away all the character's trauma, making them Not Murderers) are... usually not at all enjoyable and take away an integral aspect of the characters or their relationships to each other almost always

i was actually going to make a post abt this earlier today in regards to some tma fics and especially jonelias. but. gah. YEAH. especially with hannigram it’s actually really upsetting to me to see them presented as Cute and Healthy while taking away all of the complexity of the source material, because-- they’re a canonically abusive relationship? there is more hannigram fic tagged ‘Fluff’ (2,359) than tagged ‘Psychiatric Abuse’ (2) and imo this is actually really reflective of problems in the hannibal fandom! if y’all want fluff that doesn’t have to address psychiatric abuse, have you considered Literally Any Other Fandom! or, like, sometimes i see tma fics that try to address the problems with Daisy or Daisira by just going “au where daisy’s not a cop” when.... that is in a lot of ways the core of her character and her arc and her relationship with Basira, is being the sort of person who sorts people into ‘good’ and ‘monster’ and thinks that the monsters all deserve to die, and being in a structure that supports her in this, and Basira being part of this structure too and enabling her, and then taking a look at herself and realizing that she’s wrong

anyway i’m sure there are people out there who enjoy that stuff and like.... live your bliss, etc etc, but for me it just feels like. ripping out the nuance and the complexity and the interesting bits, and often the entire emotional core of a story, and replacing it with this.... happy thing with only a surface resemblance to whatever i loved about the source material. i really don’t like it.

(for the ship asks) alana/hannibal... mainly interested in whether you think they actually have any chemistry or no

vomit / don’t ship / okay / cute / adorable / perfect / beyond flawless / hot damn / screaming and crying / i will ship them in hellt

do they have any chemistry? no. are they important for triangulating weird fantasy/dreamscape fivesome orgies? yes. 

they are also good for: - exploring the thing where alana simultaneously pedestalizes and infantilizes will in s1 and much of the first half of s2, seeing him as innocent due to being so crazy that nothing is his fault - exploring the thing where in s1 alana represented the normal life that will wishes he could have and he’s forced to cope with her rejecting him for hannibal while also becoming increasingly disillusioned about her - after hannibal is revealed alana can have FEELINGS about how she was being deceived throughout the whole relationship

point is. it’s not about the ship itself, which is colossally boring, it’s about the things that the ship can symbolize and mean and cause feelings about! and hannibal is all about symbols and ffeelings that go far beyond what’s literally happening.

(a trope that i am sure you will have more feelings on) one is a manipulator, the other is an unstable person who cannot stop being manipulated, their relationship is incredibly toxic

you know me and you know i am So In Favor of this. i really like writing and reading about abusive relationships, especially ones that are-- not one-note, and that explore why people might get into or stay in those relationships? idk if that makes sense.

I think I get the appeal (I think?), but it’s really not my thing. (It is not helped by the fact that fandom often declares characters of average intelligence to be ‘himbos’ and then write them way dumber than they actually are.)

004 tma/hannibal if you have one, 002 jonmartin!

Unfortunately I have only seen one episode of Hannibal, so any crossover would have a whole lot of wild extrapolation. Hannibal/Martin would probably be interesting? Just stacked manipulations on manipulations on manipulations and Martin inevitably gets hurt.

The thing that actually got me to start listening to the Magnus Archives was a piece of fluffy JonMartin fanart. (This one.) So, technically speaking, from the beginning?

my thoughts:

I was initially much more into them as a ship, but my feelings cooled over time. That’s just how I go with juggernauts. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯  But I do really like them! I like the development of their relationship from ~antagonistic into the ‘us vs the world’ they have right now. (And ‘us vs the world’ always goes swimmingly in TMA! </s> </getting distracted by a different ship>) I don’t have a whole lot specific to say though, mostly because Martin is not one of the characters I have a great handle on. (And neither is Jon, really, but I do feel like I’ve got a better handle on him?)

What makes me happy about them:

That they eventually managed to get together. Which sounds kind of... ~flat, but I really appreciate how they managed to actually have a meaningful relationship despite circumstances that meant it really shouldn’t work. I just really like the whole arc of their relationship in s4. It’s great.

What makes me sad about them:

It’s all going to end tragically! Which  I am looking forward to, but will make me sad.

...and also the fact that even in a “Apocalypse is reverted, Everybody lives AU,” I’m not sure their relationship will survive that. They are so important to each other, and I’d want them to be able to have the happiness of being together in a Good End-- but their relationship is so built around surviving crises that I’m not sure it could last without that trellis.

things done in fanfic that annoys me:

I have not read enough JonMartin fic for anything to specifically annoy me? In general with TMA fic, I like any fluff to be a response to something darker, so it’s possible that ‘there is no Magnus Institute and they met in a happier fluffier way and everything goes well  AUs would bother me, but I haven’t actually... read any.

things I look for in fanfic:

Written by one of the thirty people in the TMA fandom  Hurt/Comfort, let’s be honest with ourselves. I am an unstoppable H/Cobold

My kinks:

...I honestly can’t quite picture ‘kink’  and ‘Jonathan Sims, the Archivist’ in the same sentence, especially not in a sentence that also features Martin? I guess in a narrative kink sense, I am so here for H/C, as always.

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other:

‘Comfortable’ is a word with an interesting effect here! Because I do have other ships featuring these characters, but a lot of them are ‘and this would go so horribly.’ For ships that could concievably go well: I like Martin/Tim, Jon/Gerry, and have a deep soft spot for s4 Jon?Daisy.

My happily ever after for them:

Elias crit fails his attempt to end the world and Jon and Martin get to stay in the safe house.
