I think that one of the most frustrating things about algospeak, after the "compliance in advance" self-censorship, is that there is no actual evidence-based justification for it. Everyone who uses it does so because they heard from a guy who heard from a guy that The Algorithm will bury their content if they don't use cutesy euphemisms.

People have done experiments on YouTube videos and found it does matter, even for things they claim doesn’t. I don’t know about other platforms but I would be surprised if it didn’t matter on most of them.

My information is several years old; maybe the AI censorship is smarter than the viewers at figuring out implications now so doing simple substitutions doesn’t help. But it was definitely a thing as some point.

As I said my info was several years old; I wasnʼt sure if I could find it. But it looks like this is the claimed list of words that might have issues, and on the right of the first tab they have several links talking about details and methodology. The first link is in the particularly annoying over-energetic YouTube format, but the second is a written description of the study.

As itʼs been several years I might misremember how good the study is but I think I thought it was a strong indication of at least some of its claims when I first saw it.

They mainly talk about words in titles, not in the video itself; in theory they might only look at the titles and not the contents but that would be weird.
