O sastra charcha, o estudo e a exploração das escrituras, é suficiente para atingir Moksha, ou deve-se buscar a ajuda de um Guru e praticar meditação (ou seja, upasana) para atingir Jnana (realização)?

Maharshi:

O mero aprendizado das escrituras é insuficiente. Certamente, a prática da meditação e concentração, é necessário para a realização.

Mas o que implica esse termo upasana (prática)?

Ele significa que o aspirante ainda está consciente da sua individualidade separada e imagina que está a fazer esforços para alcançar algo — algum Jnana que ele ainda não sabe que é ele mesmo. 

Ele por fim chega à verdade, a compreensão de que durante todo o tempo (incluindo o tempo de prática) ele foi (como ele é e será) o Ser — além do conceito de tempo. 

Embora seja esse estado de realização (Sahaja Sthithi), ou estado natural do Ser, que tem existido durante todo o tempo de prática (como nada mais existe), ele chama-o de "upasana" ou prática de meditação, porque a sua realização não está ainda aperfeiçoada; ele, o pensador, ou o sujeito, imagina que está passando por um processo de pensamento ou meditação sobre um objeto, quer dizer, Ishwara. 

Quando aperfeiçoado, o seu estado é denominado Jnana, ou Sahaja Sthithi, ou Atman, ou Swabhava Samsthithi, ou Sthitha Prajnatvam. Além disso, pode ser descrito como o estado em que vishaya jnanam, ou seja, o conhecimento do mundo objetivo, o não-eu, foi inteiramente apagado e nada permanece a não ser um resplendor da consciência do Eu como o Eu (Swabhava Samsthithi).

The pure state of having very great attachment to Self and having no attachment to any other thing is verily one’s state of Silence. Learning to remain as ‘I am that Silence’ and ever abiding as It is, is the true mental worship [manasika puja].

Nowadays many among us are under the impression that doing mental worship [manasika puja] means imagining that one is collecting all the necessary things such as flowers, sandal-paste, fruits, garlands and so on, and that one is offering them to God. 

However, this is only a mental activity [pravritti]. This verse teaches us that this is not the correct manasika puja, and that Self-abidance, ‘worship through Silence’ [maunopasana] mentioned above (V. 520), alone is the real manasika puja.

Unless the supreme Reality [God or Self] Itself reveals Itself in the Heart, the delusion [Maya] of this world-dream will not end. The enquiry ‘Who am I who sees this dream?’ is the worship [upasana] which brings forth the Grace of the Supreme for this revelation.

Sadhu Om: Therefore Self-enquiry is the proper upasana that one should do in order to gain the Grace of God and thereby awaken from this world-dream.
