🌙 A taste of chapter two (part one)!

Something wasn’t right. It couldn’t be. People don’t just magically wake up with longer hair and an immunity to ice…No virus on earth could cause that.

A sore throat, vomiting, headaches, congestion; those were all symptoms of a virus, any virus really.

Scratching sure could be linked to bites from something, but they had a regular exterminator, and Pete knew he didn’t bring anything home from his time at sea, so…

Where’d the bugs come from?

Pete's hands dragged down his cheeks, curving along his jaw as he sighed. A grounding gesture while also giving his brain permission to breathe.

Even if for just a moment, he let his lungs inflate only to deflate softly.

Though try as he might to rationalize, nothing was coming to the surface. This was like a puzzle, but all the pieces were white.

Or perhaps a better comparison would be dipping his hands into murky water and absentmindedly feeling around to try and find…something.

But that was the thing about dipping his hand into murky water; There was no certainty what he’d find in there.

He turned away from the box on the wall, his feet scuffing against the wooden floors, and he returned to the mid-point, a spot he could see both Tom and Jake.

“Well…?”

He exhaled and turned his attention to his husband, “Air conditioners on, love…I think you’ve just got a fever.”

Tom groaned in response, frustration more than likely.

“Then why does it feel like I’m burning alive?!”

Pete was barely able to part his lips before a deep groan from across the room took the stage.

✷ Woah! Two weeks later instead of months! Go me!

Anyway, I want to address why I broke up chapter two into four chunks!

So remember how the fic is tagged with Fanbob and Halonix, but they’re only side ships?

This portion of the fic in particular serves as a really good way to get some Fsnbob/ Halonix in there!

It’s not entirely fair to tag the fic and their existence really only be minor…plus? I reeeallly want to explore their transformations and such!

It’s not required to read the Fanbob & Halonix parts, nor do I believe it’ll be a regular occurrence this is just a portion of the fic that’d benefit from one big chapter (bc it’s all happening at roughly the same time), being broken into parts (I intend to do this again later… for reasons.)

Cordell flipped through the file on Colter Shaw. He had to admit, the man had an impressive record and nothing but positive reviews. On paper, he was the perfect person to trust to find his son.

But Cordell had dealt with plenty of these mercenary types before. The private investigators, the citizen police, rewardists- whatever they might call themselves, they tended to operate the same. Stomp all over the investigation, act like they were smarter than the cops, and usually end up causing trouble that could’ve been avoided if they had basic respect for protocol. He wasn’t sure he could trust someone like that with something as precious as his family.

But the FBI wasn’t making progress and he wasn’t allowed to do his own investigation, not without James breathing down his neck. Not that he’d be able to do much investigating in fucking Kansas as a Texas Ranger. He could take a leave of absence and do whatever he wanted but without department resources, it would be a difficult job. He’d need at least one partner to help and he couldn’t ask Cassie or Trey to put their careers on hold like that.

So, where did that leave him?

He could wait for the FBI, he could risk his badge, or he could make a phone call.

He looked at his watch. It was 3AM and he was no closer to finding August now than he had been when Cassie gave him this file.

How long could August afford to wait for him to make the right call?

Without another moment of hesitation, he dialed the number on the file. What else did he have to lose?

Sammy was slowly learning himself again.

Dean had moved him out of the dungeon after his little health scare and he was doing better. He was keeping his food down and he stopped arguing with his big brother. It wasn’t much, but it was progress.

There was still so much for Dean to teach him. He had to learn how to use a gun, how to exorcize a demon, and more. But Dean was happy to teach him. That’s what big brothers are for. 

But Sammy was talking to him and listening to him and clinging to his every word like it was gospel, the way he used to. He didn’t talk back or refuse his name or ask to go back “home”. That was a good enough start to keep him out of the dungeon, though it would be a while before he would let Sam out into the world again. Sam just needed to prove himself a little more. Then maybe they could go hunting again.

But for now, Dean would content himself with this. He set a proper burger in front of Sam. “Eat up, man. You’re too skinny.”

Sam looked up at him, only giving him a slight bitchface before digging in. “Thanks,” he said, muffled by the burger.

“Dude, don’t talk while you’re eating. I raised you better than that.”

Sammy made a show of swallowing before continuing. “I know,” he murmured. “Thank you.”

Dean ruffled his hair. “Hey, man, what are big brothers for?”

Cordell Walker had been a Texas Ranger for over a decade. He had an impressive case closure rate and his superiors praised him for his work ethic. He married his high school sweetheart soon after he retired from the military and was a father of two. He was a well respected member of the community and a badass with a badge.

All the information Colter Shaw and his team had dug up on the ranger didn’t manage to prepare him for how intense Walker’s gaze was. They were sitting in a bar and Cotler felt like he was handcuffed in an interrogation room.

“So, could you tell me a little more about this case? Your email didn’t say much besides what you were willing to pay.” Normally, he wouldn’t have even taken a job like this, but the paycheck was too good to turn down and his gut told him it was the right move regardless.

Cordell nodded and pulled out a file, passing it across the table to Colter. “My son was kidnapped by a dangerous psychopath a few weeks ago. The FBI is actively on the case, but they’re not making any headway and the furthest we’ve gotten in the investigation is that this guy has a base somewhere in Kansas. Since I can’t work on the investigation myself and the FBI is going nowhere, I took a chance on you. I want you to find my son, and I want to go with you when you do it.”

Colter read over the file while Cordell talked. Just looking at Dean Winchester’s rap sheet made him shiver. Getting August out of there as soon as possible was a priority, but he wasn’t sure he was the right guy to call. Colter specialized in tracking and that did sometimes involve dealing with some level of psychopaths, but this was a whole different league of crazy. “This isn’t the kind of job I normally get called for,” he said carefully. “Rescuing a teenager from a serial killer is really more in the FBI’s wheelhouse.”

“And, as I just explained to you, the FBI isn’t making a lot of progress on that front,” Cordell emphasized. “I understand your normal jobs are more…tame. I do. And I know I took a risk calling you. But nothing is being done in the office and I can’t just sit on my ass while God knows what is happening to my son. My only other resort is just going at this on my own, and I’m still somewhat level-headed enough to know that’s a terrible idea.” He sighed. “I need help. If you want more money I can-”

“Don’t worry about that,” Colter said. “The offer you gave me is more than generous, and I assure you I only collect upon success. I just want you to be aware that this isn’t my normal wheelhouse, nor is working with a partner.”

“I know. I know. But I had to try.”

“And I’m going to help you,” Colter promised. “I’ll do whatever I can to bring your son home.”

Cordell smiled, relief flooding his features. “Thank you. When do we start?”

“Whenever you’re ready.”

August was just playing along. He was responding to “Sammy”, he was laughing at the right jokes, he was eating the right food, and reading the right books. It wasn’t anything serious. He was just playing along long enough for Dad to find him, that’s all.

It was a safety precaution. He’d learned the hard way that actually trying to get away wouldn’t do him any good. It was self-preservation, that’s all. Just staying alive and trying to stay sane in this completely insane situation.

Dean slowly started to trust him more, so the leash was let out bit by bit. Dean would leave the bunker for supplies and to make phone calls he didn’t want August to hear. And he would sit in the library and read the books that Dean would smile at him reading while he waited for Dean to come back.

After another week, Dean started showing him around more of the bunker and teaching him how to use the guns in the shooting range. August already knew how to use most of them thanks to his Texas heritage, but it was good practice anyway. He made note of where Dean got the key to the gun room from. Maybe, with a little more patience, he’d have a way out. If he could stomach hurting another person that way.

So he bided his time, laughed at every joke, ate every hamburger, and responded to every “Sammy”. And Dean rewarded him with time alone and the occasional trip outside. The more Dean trusted him, the more brotherly he acted, asking him for his opinions on different songs or books and ribbing him for his answers.

He should’ve been scared, but it was almost enjoyable to have someone care so much. It’s not like he got much of it at home, what with everyone having a million concerns besides him. It was nice to be in the center of attention sometimes. It was nice to be praised. It was nice to see his efforts rewarded. Not that he was enjoying it here…. He did want to go home. But still.

Then, one day, he passed a test he hadn’t even been studying for.

He always kept an ear out for Dean when they were in the bunker. Even if Dean was on the other side of the place, he seemed to have a shortcut to every room, so it was important to be on alert. He was in the library, as usual, when he heard Dean come in. Dean was saying something, but he hadn’t heard anything important yet, so he ignored it.

“August?”

“It’s October 18th,” he muttered in reply. What was with the random date question?

“That so, Sammy?”

Sam looked up from his book. “Yeah? Why?”

Dean smiled. “Nothing. What do you want for lunch?”

Sam shrugged. “Same thing we always have, I guess.”

“Alright. Grill’s on!”

Sam rolled his eyes and followed his brother to the kitchen. Someone had to make sure the place didn’t burn down….

Dinner for four?

This is the sequel to 'An introduction to remember', one of the many instalments to my Adrian and Amy series.

Author's note: This was meant to be posted this morning (apologies), though I must admit that I've had a fair amount to drink today so I wanted to sober up before I posted this. It's been a long time coming.

Adrian’s gaze drifts to her father’s extended hand, hesitating briefly before reaching out to take it.

‘Th-the pleasure is all mine, Sir,’ Adrian clears his throat, his lips curving into a rather timid smile, ‘I-I am sorry that our meeting did not happen sooner.’

‘You’re here now,’ Helena interjects, beaming brightly as she steps forward, resting a gentle hand on her husband’s arm, ‘that’s all that matters.’

Adrian lets out a breath of relief, though it quickly dissipates as Amy’s father speaks.

‘It would have been nicer to have met you before you got my daughter-‘

‘Dad.’

Her father turns his attention to Amy, who greets his with a warning glare, her arms swiftly folding across her chest.

‘You knew that it would come up in conversation, sweetheart…’

Adrian remains quiet, his fingertips ghosting Amy’s as he interlocks his fingers with hers; she immediately looks down at their intertwined hands, smiling softly at the gesture before giving his a comforting squeeze, as if reassuring him of her presence.

…but it is of no use.

As soon as their hands meet, Adrian detangles them, taking a step back; he shakes his head, his expression turning stoic as his gaze drifts to the ground.

‘I can’t do this…’

‘W-what?’

Amy slowly approaches him, her brows furrowed with concern as she reaches out to touch his arm.

‘Adrian?’

‘I’m sorry…’ he looks up at her, their eyes meeting for only a moment before he lowers them once more, ‘I can’t.’

He disappears out the door, the shutter closing quietly behind him as he descends the stairs and clambers into the car. Amy follows shortly after, making sure that her parents remain inside before heading onto the porch. She calls out to him, but he starts the engine, the sound of her voice swiftly masked by the sound of his tyres against the gravelly tarmac as he reverses.

‘Adrian, please!’

Her plea goes unheeded, and before long, she is left alone in the darkness, his car soon disappearing out of sight. She lets out a shaky breath, her eyes welling with tears as she turns back towards the house. She walks back up the steps, pausing on the porchway as the door opens; she is met by her mother, who greets her with a sad smile.

‘I’m so sorry, sweetheart,’ she stands aside to let Amy re-enter, closing and locking the door gently behind them as they head through to the kitchen, ‘will he be alright?’

Amy shrugs, sighing dejectedly; she takes a seat on a barstool, resting her elbows on the marble-top before running her hands through her hair in frustration.

‘It…it’s not his fault, darlin’,’ her father leans against the counter, ‘I should never have pushed the topic so soon…especially after seeing how nervous the poor lad was.’

Amy shakes her head, ‘no it’s mine.’

Her mother looks at her in shock, ‘but you didn’t-‘

‘I kept asking him to meet you…I told him so many times that it was important to me…’ she closes her eyes for a moment, her breath shaky, ‘I shouldn’t have pushed him when he wasn’t ready.’

‘Amy…’

‘I’m going to go to bed,’ she gets up from the chair, her arms gently wrapping around her midsection, ‘I’ll um…I’ll sort out a hotel for tomorrow night.’

‘W-what about dinner?’

‘I’ve lost my appetite,’ she pauses, looking down at her feet, ‘goodnight.’

Her mother opens her mouth to speak, but Amy has already disappeared by the time she manages to get a word out.

A few hours later, Amy is startled awake by the sound of her phone vibrating against her bedside table. She groggily moves to sit up, reaching for the device and checking the screen.

Adrian.

She doesn’t answer, instead choosing to let it ring, turning over and cocooning herself in her bedcovers.

Back in his apartment, Adrian stares down at his phone, frowning as he receives no answer.

‘It’s two o’clock in the morning, Adrian… she’ll be sleeping.’

He glances up at the doorway; Kamilah stands slightly to the right of it, one hand resting on her hip as the other buries itself in her trouser pocket.

‘Get some sleep and try again tomorrow. It’ll give you some time to think over what you want to say.’

‘I left her there, Kamilah – I got in the car and drove off.’

‘She’ll understand.’

He sighs defeatedly, flopping down into the nearest armchair.

‘Why am I like this?’

‘Because you care,’ she heads towards the drink cabinet, uncorking a bottle of wine, ‘you wanted to make a good impression with her parents.’

‘And I was until I chickened out and abandoned her. I’d be surprised if they ever wanted to see me again.’

‘They’ll know that it wasn’t your fault.’

‘And what if they don’t?’

‘Then they are not worth the air that you breathe.’

She pours them both a glass, handing Adrian his before taking a seat on the chair opposite.

‘Thanks,’ he mumbles.

‘Would it help if I told you that I’ve spoken to them before?’

He immediately looks up at her words, his eyes wide.

‘You-you have?’

She nods, ‘it was a couple of months ago. You were out of town for a business meeting; Amy was feeling a little down so I…I went to talk to her.’

He quirks a brow in surprise, his mouth agape. He goes to speak, but she holds up a hand, as if pausing his train of thought so that she may continue.

‘We talked for a little while about what was worrying her…and then her parents facetimed her. Turns out, her mother is quite the botanist.’

‘H…how were they?’

‘Kind,’ a warm smile blossoms on her face, ‘they really do want the best for their daughter.’

‘And am I what is best for her?’

Kamilah’s smile fails to falter, instead growing brighter with each passing syllable.

‘Without a doubt.’

He nods, lifting his glass to his lips and quickly downing the contents, a flicker of hope dancing on his features as he looks up at her.

‘What would I do without you?’

She shakes her head in amusement, wiping the corner of her mouth with the pad of her thumb.

‘You have a wonderful woman by your side, Adrian…if you do anything to ruin this, I will hurt you.’

He smiles brightly, as if on cloud nine.

‘I believe you.’

She too drinks her fill, gently removing Adrian’s glass from his grasp before heading back over to the liquor, hesitating by the entrance to the kitchen, ‘care to join me for another?’

‘I think I’ll quit while I’m ahead,’ he stands, reaching up to remove his tie, ‘if I am to drive back tomorrow, then I better get my beauty sleep.’

She chuckles heartily, moving to place the glasses in the dishwasher, ‘then I shall see you both once you return home.’

He walks over to her, gently patting her arm.

‘Thank you for always supporting me, Kamilah.’

‘You know I’m here for you no matter what,’ she grins mischievously, ‘to a degree.’

‘It’s nice to see that you’re there for Amy too. It…it means a lot.’

She feigns a grimace, ‘soppiness is not my forte, brother.’

He laughs, shaking his head bemusedly.

‘We’ll thaw your heart out eventually.’

‘When hell freezes over,’ she speaks softly, a faint smile gracing her lips, ‘but before you muster the courage to even try…I’ll be on my way.’

She walks over to the elevator, forcefully pressing the button.

‘So does that mean that you won’t be attending parenting class-‘

‘Goodbye, Adrian!’

She calls out as the doors open, disappearing as the sound of his laughter carries through the penthouse. Once Adrian is alone, he turns off the lights and heads into the bedroom, his fingers moving confidently across his screen as he sends his final message of the night.

: I’m coming back for you. I promise.
