U People

This week in class our viewing of “U People: A LGBT Rocumentary” gave us a visual representation of the consciousness-raising groups represented in Janet Freedman’s Reclaiming the Feminist Vision. A group of African American women, mostly lesbians, came together to make a music video in a home in Brooklyn. The women not only made the music video, but also supported and listened to each other’s stories and shared experiences. This area for these women to tell their stories without being judged was exactly what a consciousness-raising group stands for. I believe that this is very much so a way for women to empower each other. When we share our experiences, we are able to see that our fights are not our own. There are others who are also go through challenges as well. It is empowering to hear how other women handle their own experiences as well as know that there are other women available to support you.

           As well as empowering each other through their shared experiences, the women in this Rocumentary were able to learn from each other. While most of the women were lesbians, some of the women were more “butch” or “feminine” than others. The women who were more “butch” shared the troubles they go through with their appearance. This differed from the women who were more “feminine” who had not shared the same experiences. This gave them the opportunity, however, to discuss these differences and come together to a place of understanding. As they all opened up more and more, all of the women felt more at peace and proud of who they were.
