You can use Upper-structure Triads as a great way to get some interesting and colorful chords.

On guitar they can be a bit tricky because we have to construct our own voicings rather than rely on systems like drop2 or shell voicings. But they are often beautiful 4-5 note voicings and making your own chords like this is both fun and good for both theory and fretboard knowledge. In this video I will go over four examples of voicing sets and talk about how you can make your own and explore the sounds and your guitar neck.

The Diminished scale has some beautiful sounds when used on dom7th chords! In this video I go over some of the options you have when looking at the upper-structure triads found in the diminished scale. I then use some of these triads in jazz licks to demonstrate how to put them to use.

The triad is one of the strongest melodies that we have. It is a part of so many famous songs that it makes sense to work on using triads when playing a jazz guitar solo. 

In this lesson I will go over the triads you can use for all the chords in a 12 bar Jazz Blues in the key of F. I also will talk about how I use some of these triads in a solo that I played and transcribed. At the end of the lesson I will also go over some exercises that are useful if you want to be more flexible when using triad based improvisation.

6 Triads for a Cmaj7 Chord (well 10 actually..)

Using triads to play jazz chords is a great way to get the sound of the chord and have a flexible three note voicing that you can change the extensions and melody on. This video is going over 6 triads that I use for my Cmaj7 voicings
