Ivar still lets me use him as a pillow on hikes. He ADORES affection from me (and other people he trusts), often butting his head under my hand for pets, or leaning against my legs and then keeling over at my feet for belly rubs. When we’re chilling out for breaks on hikes, he lays down and lets me use him as a pillow, and if I move away from him, he’ll scoot himself closer again. On camping trips, when he sleeps in a tent with me, he rests his head on my chest and even if I roll over, he nudges himself into some absurd position to get as cuddly with me as possible. I had a unique opportunity to photograph some cool perspective shots of an "angry" woofer the other day! Ivar is very comfortable with me while he eats, but doesn't like to share with his adopted brothers, Cabal and Jude. This "mean" face is merely a communicative tactic to let another canine (in this case, Jude) know that "this resource is claimed! Please go find another!" and is intended to diffuse conflict. Many people make the error of punishing their dog for growling or making "mean" faces at other dogs, which can actually make the animal more aggressive (and unpredictable) in the long run. Please do not punish a dog for growling; instead, read it as a sign that they're uncomfortable, and take action to diffuse the situation, either by redirecting the dog's attention, or leaving the area. When a dog is punished for growling, it learns not to express discomfort, and feels forced to escalate straight to biting when stressed, scared, or anxious. I haven't been feeling at the top of my game recently. As the days grow shorter and the skies get darker, I find myself retreating from the people and things that I love. So yesterday, I took Ivar out to the foothills to wander through the forest with me. Normally, on these walks, Ivar is bright and bubbly and trying to playfully shove his nose into every nook and cranny we can find out there. He is something of a handful on most trips to the wilderness. But last night, he was calm - even patient - as I walked him through a secluded clear cut. He became exceptionally affectionate, as well, when I couldn't take another step, and paused to sit in the middle of the trail. Ivar shoved his head under my hand, rubbed his cheek against my face, and stood over me with his paws in my lap as the sunlight faded so I could bury my tears in his chest. It grew too dark to take any more photos, but we lingered in the woods for a time even so. I savored the moment too much to move from it. This experience was a unique one. Wolfdogs are self-motivated animals, who want things their way and who don't often make exceptions. But at a time when I was feeling down, Ivar did make an exception, it seems. And despite the darkness Autumn brings, he made my world brighter because of it, at least for a moment. The coat coloration of many dog breeds can go through drastic changes as the animal grows from puppy to adult. But in higher-content wolfdogs, just as with pure wolves, these changes occur with very few exceptions. All are born a dark uniform color ranging from earthy brown to black. You will never see healthy, well-bred higher-content wolfdogs born white, piebald, or with defined markings across their bodies and faces as you'd expect in huskies or malamutes. Ivar was born looking a bit like a furry potato. Same size and coloration! His coat has now gone through several dramatic changes, and his facial markings, too, have evolved as he's grown. Recently, I've noticed that his underfur, which was a tawny color in months prior, is loosing it's hue and giving way to an off-white tint instead. He's also developing a brighter streak across his shoulders, his V-cape is turning black, and the dark stripe down his nose is starting to become more blended, too. I have no idea what he will look like as an adult at this point.
