A scene from chapter 5 of You're Not Yet Done by @ursafootprints [i.e. my absolute favorite starker fic]

"It wasn't your fault," he snapped. "You didn't do anything wrong. It would have happened anyway, okay, because it was him and not you, but you act like-- you still act like I don't want you around or something, or like I'm afraid of you or whatever, like you can't get close or I'll freak out which is so stupid because I'm the one that keeps pushing--"

"You flinched," Tony said in the pause between one word and the next, and then he flinched himself, like his own words came as a shock.

Peter went still, a beat behind in processing the abrupt change of gears, the tidal wave of anger in him warring with an opposing gale of confusion.

"What?" He said, finally, when even after a few moments of heavy silence he still couldn't pin down what Mr. Stark meant.

Mr. Stark closed his eyes and rubbed a hand over his face, but his voice wasn't muffled at all when he said, "The day after. When you found me in the hallway after I ran out at breakfast, I was going to touch your shoulder and you flinched."

Peter's mind picked out the memory and played it back-- standing in front of Mr. Stark with Westcott's voice in his head and seeing Mr. Stark reach for him, and wanting that touch so badly that he gasped--

All of his anger drained away in a dizzying swoop of mortification instead, and Peter retreated a step, cheeks burning.

"That-- that wasn't. A flinch," he said, because he had to, because he couldn't keep letting Mr. Stark beat himself up over scaring him or whatever he was thinking, but he kind of wanted to sink through the floor as he said it.

Mr. Stark stopped short of rolling his eyes, but he raised his eyebrows sardonically with a disbelieving frown in that way that screamed stop bullshitting me without him ever saying a word.

Peter raised his chin automatically with a reflexive stubbornness, and somehow forced himself to say, "It wasn't! It was, like."

He paused, and swallowed hard, the tingling burn in his cheeks creeping all the way up to his ears. It felt so fucking embarrassing to admit, but, like-- Mr. Stark had to know, right? He'd heard Peter invite him to bed. He'd seen-- he'd felt-- the way Peter had reacted to him, in the cell. He had to already know. He just wasn't connecting the dots for this particular situation, but he had to know.

"Anticipation," Peter finally admitted, mumbling it towards the ground.

Tony was quiet for long enough that Peter risked a glance, crossing his arms for the limited strength that could give him, but Tony looked so sincerely lost even with that explanation that Peter realized with a jolt-- maybe he hadn't known.

"It just," Peter started to explain, unfolding his arms. "It just, it was. It was, like, a-- a good sound. I thought-- you wouldn't--"

Once he got started, the rest of the words came bursting out of him, and Peter wrung his hands and retreated another two strides until he was pressed back against the table again as he blurted, "I thought you wouldn't even want to look at me, forget anything else, after I'd been-- such a weird clingy freak-- I thought you'd be embarrassed of me, so when you--"

"No," Tony said, strained, "no, no, Peter," and he crossed the space between them before Peter could process it and reached to gather up one of Peter's hands in both of his.

Peter felt his tension drop away at the warm press of Mr. Stark's hands enveloping his, even as his eyes prickled with tears at that shameful confession, and he took a shaky breath as he looked up into Mr. Stark's pain-creased face.

"No, Peter, never, why would I-- you're perfect," and Peter saw it hit Mr. Stark at the same time it went through him like lightning, the memory of the last time Mr. Stark had said those words to him. Mr. Stark took his own unsteady breath though, and rallied, pressing on, "You didn't do anything wrong. I'm not-- at you-- I'm who you should be--"

"Oh my god," Peter growled, abruptly furious, and he clutched Mr. Stark's hands to his chest as he surged to his feet, so they were only inches apart. "Why are you so hard on yourself-- you're not listening to me, you're so caught up in your weird guilt thing that you're not even-- I don't care if you touch me."

Mr. Stark's expression was a picture of perfect shock.

"I want you to touch me," Peter said, something heavy and relentless in his chest desperate to come out.

Mr. Stark's heartbeat was fast, fast, fast.

"I'd let you do way more than touch my shoulder or ruffle my hair," Peter said, quieter.

He should stop. He knew he should stop. But--

There wasn't any anger left in him when Peter admitted, whisper-soft, "I wish you would."

Mr. Stark was utterly still. He didn't step away, and he didn't loosen his hands around Peter's, and he didn't part his lips to tell Peter what a creepy spoiled brat he was being. He just stared at Peter in helpless shock while his heart banged in his ribcage.

thank you for asking about my wips!! these are both old wips that have been on the backburner because i've been seized by uhhh bandom brainrot, BUT i really want to go back and finish them sometime. i've actually written a good chunk of both of them, i just need to kick myself in the butt to finish them!

full answer beneath the cut because i included some excerpts!

homecoming starker - a post-homecoming missing scene fic where tony finds peter when he's sitting on top of the Cyclone roller coaster after the Vulture fight. peter is super beat up and doesn't want to go home right away so tony buys him mcdonald's and takes him to a condo he owns in the area. peter thinks he's in for another lecture (since the last time they talked was after the ferry incident); meanwhile, tony is freaking out because he took away peter's spidey suit and peter almost DIED (peter is also freaking out because he almost died, and he has never gotten hurt this bad before as spider-man). the fic is meant to instigate the transition from tony being the Distant Figure that he is in homecoming to a more active mentor/presence in peter's life (like he is in all the fanfics), so of course they end up talking stuff out. because i love fix-its and making characters talk things out, lol

also though i call it starker, the fic is really preslash/could definitely be tagged & not / but of course in my heart they WILL fall in love one day hahaha

wtf i looked at my draft to get an excerpt and THIS FIC IS ALMOST DONE, WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME (it's only like 3k but i am chronically bad at finishing fics no matter the length)

Tears well up. He fights them back, not wanting to cry in front of Mr. Stark. But he still can’t get his voice to sound quite normal as he whispers, “I’m sorry.” “You’re sorry,” Mr. Stark echoes. And then, incredulously, “You’re sorry? What the hell do you have to be sorry for?” Peter swallows. “I caused trouble for you.” “Kid.” Mr. Stark pinches the bridge of his nose. “That is the last thing I’m worried about right now.” “Then… what are you worried about?” Mr. Stark stares at him, eyes wide. “I’m worried about you,” he snaps, and suddenly the anger that’s been radiating from him the whole night takes on a whole different shade. “Oh,” Peter says, for lack of anything better. “God, kid.” Mr. Stark shakes his head. “I’m the one who has to apologize here.” Peter waits, but Mr. Stark doesn’t say anything else. Mr. Stark must see something expectant in his look, because he says, “What?” “Well…” Peter hesitates. “You haven’t said ‘sorry’ yet. Not that I think you need to! But if you want to apologize, um. ‘Sorry’ is a pretty good place to start.”

kittydevil - a silly little fic where matt murdock gets transformed into a kitty cat and peter finds him and takes him back to his apartment. this is in a vague future AU where peter is in college at Columbia so spidey swings by hell's kitchen every once in a while after becoming friends with daredevil. matt's only a kitty for a couple days, but that is still enough time for peter to become worried sick about him when foggy calls and says he's missing. and then of course matt turns back into himself... naked... in peter's bed. WE KNOW HOW THIS TROPE GOES!

Slowly, Matt untenses. He even takes a few steps closer to Peter and clambers into his lap, to which Peter makes a pleased noise. “Yeah,” he says. “We’re okay.” He rubs Matt’s head, then runs his hands along his sides. “No way you’re a stray, are you? Sweet thing like you. You seem clean, and well-fed, but these scars… Rough kittenhood, maybe?” Matt pretends his heart doesn’t do a funny little twinge when Peter calls him sweet thing. As Peter keeps petting him, Matt feels himself truly calm down for the first time since he was turned into a cat. Something rumbles in his chest—a purr. “Aww,” Peter says, like his heart is melting. Matt feels like he’s melting too, until he’s a boneless puddle in Peter’s lap. Cozy. “Good boy,” Peter says softly. Matt closes his eyes. His purr doesn’t falter.

What made you ship it?

irondad was definitely the gateway for me heheheheh. tbh when antis tag or caption things like 'do not tag as st*rker' all that does is make me wanna check out the starker tag myself lmaoooo, so i did~

even tho it's not my first 'problematic' ship, after months of obsessively reading fluffy af platonic/familial field trips fics, dipping into starker was like:

and then lmao i read ride to church anon fics with all that delicious tension and situational conflict and slid right into:

in addition to very quickly acquiring a taste for it, when posting ficlets and gifsets i started throwing both starker and irondad tags on things just to broaden the audience it would reach and the starker community was very warm and welcoming! then i had a couple brushes with anon anti[s?] with a comment on a fic whining about the dual tag [on a platonic, g-rated piece that could be interpreted either way] and then my first actual starker fic [which was barely even racy, little more than some tension lmao] i cross posted here and the post got flagged and taken down within 24 hrs, i assume because someone reported it. so anyway idk man shit like that just drives one away from the community with unpleasant ppl in it and more toward the welcoming one? i made a starker side blog and never looked back UuU

What are your favorite things about the ship?

they foil wonderfully as characters. they think terribly alike, both taking on this heavy guilt over their own perceived failures. same humor and wit, same intellect/self made tech, same losses in life [on the same damn day i kid you not; dec 16, starks dead, may dead [nwh 'out' on 17th but could actually see it the 16th in theaters]]. shared colors. but one rich, one poor. one in the public eye, one masked. one older, experienced and worn down, one young, vibrant and earnest. even their kit is juxtaposed interestingly: tony's repulsors push stuff and peter's webs pull stuff. and they both care so damn much.

tony the futurist sees the future thriving in this kid's hands. peter looks up to him like none other. they see the best in each other and the worst in themselves. mix in the traumas [how hard it is for tony to trust ppl and how he trusts peter with more of his tech than anyone] and then the shared traumas, and the devotion of going to and beyond the damn ends of the earth for each other. how peter's sunshine heart can pull tony toward being better and tony pushes peter to be as good as he possibly can be. and with all the very good reasons they shouldn't get together, it's just so fucking good when they can't help but want to.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

hmm i really can't think of any so, nope. some tropes i enjoy more than others but whatever fits for the context of the fanwork yknow, i'll entertain just about any take.

no lie i had lost all steam on that story and started only thinking back on the parts i put in there that i remembered being kinda cringey. but i just reread chapter 4 and 5 and like damn it's not bad actually? i wrote that? woah

ch 5 has been ready like since i posted ch 4 and i just never got around to posting it? i think i vaguely remember waiting on a beta reader seal of approval and then forgor and moved on a lil.

but uh yeah i should heckin finish that story eh, maybe rework a few planned details im not as excited abt with it anymore... hmmm hmmm
