BTS’s ‘Dynamite’ Sold A Quarter Of A Million Copies In Its First Week In The U.S.
BTS has shown time and time again that they can sell a song and an album like very few figures in the music industry, but that doesn’t make their continued success any less impressive. This week, they blow everyone else in the business away with their new single “Dynamite,” which doesn’t just launch as the bestselling track in the U.S. this week, but as the biggest seller in a long, long time.
According to data provided by Nielsen Music NLSN, BTS’s “Dynamite” will debut at No. 1 on Billboard’s Digital Song Sales chart tomorrow (when the company refreshes all of its rankings) with an astounding 265,000 copies sold. That’s not just a notable sum, it’s nearly unheard of these days.
In just one week, “Dynamite” has instantly become one of the bestselling songs in America this year, and it’s highly likely they will wrap 2020 claiming the largest sales frame for a single.
The 265,000 copies “Dynamite” sold should be enough to send it right to No. 1 on the Hot 100, though nothing is certain until Billboard reveals its official ranking, which could come at any moment (the media outlet typically shares the top 10 most-consumed songs in the country every Monday). Usually, tracks need strong support at radio or massive streaming figures to mix with healthy sales in order for a cut to climb all the way to the peak position, but when purchases are as numerous as in this instance, it’s difficult to imagine anything beating it to the throne.
While sales will likely push “Dynamite” to No. 1 on the Hot 100, the catchy smash was also a huge streaming success. In its first seven full days of availability on platforms like Spotify, Apple Music and so on, the tune racked up just under 34 million plays. On top of that, the upbeat summery cut was warmly received at radio, and it should shoot up the Billboard Pop Songs ranking again tomorrow.
“Dynamite” will become BTS’s fourth No. 1 on the Digital Song Sales ranking tomorrow, joining “Fake Love,” “Idol” with Nicki Minaj and this year’s “On,” which ruled that chart just a few months ago.
As if debuting “Dynamite” at No. 1 wasn’t enough of a show of force, BTS sees their previous hit “On” vault up the ranking once again. This frame, the lead Map of the Soul: 7 single returns to No. 10 on the list with just over 6,500 copies sold. That means that the South Korean septet bookends the top 10, which is a feat not often seen.
With their latest single, BTS decided to try something a bit different, singing entirely in English. That fact may have contributed somewhat to the tune’s success, but a massive fan base of die-hard followers who are known to purchase more than one copy at once, mixed with the fact that several different versions of “Dynamite” were released within the tracking period (with all of them likely being combined into one entity) are the real reason the song performed so extremely well upon its arrival.

Mini media mogul Jay Penske is pushing into territory Billboard has held since the 1940s. But is the music world ready to switch?
Rolling Stone is saying their charts “will be more effective than Billboard’s in three key ways: they will be updated daily as opposed to weekly, they will go deeper on streaming data, and they will be completely transparent about their measurement methodologies.”
Starting on Monday, we’ll see if they provide a better measurement method. Billboard has been forever vague about the value of the various metrics they mix together to get their results. UK Official Charts took steps last year to diminish the effects of streaming on chart positions while Billboard has not. I look forward to seeing full disclosure of Rolling Stone’s method on Monday or sooner.
