Customers should implement a “sniffing test” instead of relying on use-by dates for certain foods, according to Wrap, the Government’s food waste group.
A report from Wrap found that supermarkets are encouraging people to throw food in the bin earlier than necessary by using potentially misleading use-by dates. Wrap found makers of yoghurts, cheese and bread are increasingly defying official labeling guidelines and replacing “best before” labels with use-by dates on packs.
Dr Andrew Parry, Special Adviser at Wrap, said: “Getting this right could save consumers a lot of money which is why we are telling the industry that if there isn’t a food safety risk they should not print use by dates on packs. We have already been talking to the UK dairy industry and the juice industry, and good progress has already been made.”
The charity said smelling foods instead of relying solely on the use-by dates would save more than 100 million pints of milk each year.
According to the Food Standards Agency, almost one third of consumers eat food based on how it looks and smells instead of relying on the use-by date. While the NHS still recommends against this, warning it could lead to food poisoning, foods kept in perfect conditions are typically safe for a few days after the use by date.
