She holds a knife to his throat. The blade presses into his skin, not enough to make him bleed, but enough to make the threat ever-present. “If I wanted you dead, you would be," she says. An old friend once told him that his sincerity bleeds through his every feature, even in the moments he was lying. He wonders if this girl can sense that same thing now. He hopes she does. “I believe you.” -- He 'rescues' her from Tamsye Prime. She never wanted to be rescued. But in the years to come, they find that their lives are increasingly intertwined, and that there's no escaping fate.

They hadn’t meant for it to happen. Helping Maia get free of Codo was supposed to be quick and easy, in and out. They made an appearance at the party, found their way upstairs into the study, and it wasn’t long before they spotted the scratch marks on the wall that indicated an oft-moved painting. The safe was ancient, easy enough to crack. Once they had it open, they got the money and they got out of there. Maia was almost free. Almost.

At some point in the night, he decides he won’t be getting any sleep after all. He didn’t exactly expect to get a full night’s rest, but he thought maybe a couple of hours would do him some good. The wind here, though, shakes things around too much. Nothing is built to last. There’s too much interference from the physical reality of this shitty motel in a backwater town in the middle of nowhere for him not to be vigilant to a fault.  Another couple must stumble into the room next door, because their sounds echo the ones from before. And he… he could get off on this, right? It’s not that much different than watching porn. It’s not like the couple will ever know. He thinks a moment longer about jerking himself off, letting his hand run softly up and down his own body and cupping himself through his underwear. He’s not hard, but it won’t take long at the rate they’re going. He’s about to slip his hand beneath the waistband of his underwear when he hears the undeniable and sharp sound of someone backhanding another person’s face accompanied by a startled cry, a woman’s cry.  He pauses—it could be that they’re just into some kinky shit. Nothing wrong with that. But when he hears the woman loudly yelling, punctuated by a clear and present, “What the fuck?!” from the man. God. He’s got to stop caring so much.
