(no pun intended) i’m not wild about the patrick wolf song at the end of God’s Own Country, it feels very....... livejournal in 2011, if I can say that (feels mean), and my idea of the music that naturally grows out of the Mood and Environment and Landscape of this film is a little bit different. BUT the characters in GOF do not choose to engage with music — i’ve met farmers who literally go through the whole day with headphones on, i’ve met farmers who literally play the radio the ENTIRE day in their tractors because it makes the job seem less lonely & they get to hear human voices — and the GOC characters really do not do that. THAT SAID: here is my god’s own country playlist presented in the most user unfriendly way, ie., LINKS to YOUTUBE VIDEOS
1. the world is as soft as lace - felt
2. in my view - young fathers “nothing’s ever given away/ I believe to advance that you must pay”
3. bluebeard (alternate version) - cocteau twins “Are you waiting for me? / Are you safe, are you my friend? / Or are you toxic for me? / Will you betray my confidence?”
4. beneath the southern cross - patti smith “Who walked / The curve of the world / Whose bones scraped / Whose flesh unfurled”
5. ploughboy lads - alasdair roberts “I love his hair and i love his skin/ I love the very cart he harrows in”
6. Hé, Robechon ! - adam de la halle, ensemble micrologus (extract from a medieval pastoral musical drama about shepherds) in short: “hey robin, come to me! / and we’ll play!” - “Hey marion! / I’m coming to you!”
7. J'ai Encore Un Tel Pasté - adam de la halle, ensemble micrologus (extract from a medieval pastoral musical drama about shepherds) “j’ai encore un tel pastie / qui n’est mie de laste / que nous mangerons, marote / bec a bec, et moi et vous” - i’m paraphrasing but - “I’ve got another one of those great pies / That we can eat together, darling / Mouth to mouth, you and I” [i confess these two are deep cuts but i’m obsessed with this recording] [GOC is a film abt. nourishment. fight me]
8. glow worms - vashti bunyan “Moving slowly through the springtime air / Holding moments in the depth of care”
9. a kissed-out red floatboat - cocteau twins (does this have decipherable lyrics? debatable! but some people think she says: “I'm standing here /
If I said “love,” you’d listen, my heart”)
10. help me lift you up - mary margaret o’hara “don't have to tell you that you're all alone / Hear what we will, not go home”
11. when you know why you’re happy - (mmoh cover) - Richard Reed Parry & Little Scream “there is but one life / One life won’t do”
12. devotion - tirzah “I just want you to listen / I don’t want a solution / I just want to explain things”
13. tranquil eye - cocteau twins
