On June 15, 1938, the USS Honolulu, a 9,650-ton Brooklyn-class light cruiser built at the Brooklyn Navy Yard was commissioned. In the background is the Manhattan Bridge. On December 7, 1941, the Honolulu was moored at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese Navy attacked. The ship escaped with only minor hull damage from a near-miss bomb that exploded under the water.
