"Just leave me alone."
Jane stood quietly, listening and doing her best to take it all in. No wonder Tony had such a hard time taking anything in his adult life seriously, no wonder he had such a skewed idea of relationships. If he grew up in a home with this much pain, and a set of parents this disjointed… Jane’s heart hurt for their family, but right now, it especially hurt for Maria.
She swallowed hard and took a step forward, masking her face of any signs that the elegant woman across from her had any chance of intimidating her.
"No." she said softly, "no, I won’t leave you alone. Your son is one of the most important people in my life, and when I thought I wanted to be left alone, he refused and he probably saved my life because of it. He wasn’t even Iron Man at the time, he was just a stupid party-prince who couldn’t keep it in his pants, but you know what? He cared."
Jane walked around Maria Stark, amazed that she was even in this situation at all, and faced her. “I care, too, Mrs. Stark. I care, and I’m not going to leave you alone, so you can scream, or you can smash things, or do whatever it is that you need to do to let it all out, but I’m staying right here, because I know that when a person has that much pain inside, they may think they want to be alone, but really they just want to know somebody’s there to see them without a mask and care to stick around.”
