Who’s this funky gal…
Came back to tumblr to see my Alphys posts are getting some notes again so here I am coming out of my hole and ranting about her once more.
Another thing that personally bothers me as an Alphys enjoyer is how little both aspects of her personality are utilized. Yes she has committed war crimes but she is ALSO a dorky anime lover.
This is not to trash on either aspect of her. If you want to portray Alphys as just a dorky anime lover, that is okay. If you want to portray Alphys as some horrible woman who committed atrocities in the name of the king, that is also fine.
But I personally think the BEST Alphys variants are mixes of both of these. They take her parts, weave them together, and make her whole.
Take my favorite Alphys-Centered AU for example, by tumblr user @/artsyrean, Doctor Megalo.
Doctor Megalo first of all, is an absolutely amazingly written AU, and deserves so much more attention already, go check it out.
Second of all, Doctor Megalo takes the aspect of her committing these egregious sins, and balances it out with her deep understanding of others, and that nerdy urge to just simply be cool. It’s a wonderful blend that truly makes this Alphys stand out to me, because it simply feels like her. It feels like Alphys and I must commend Artsy for this. She truly feels like herself.
All of this is to say; play around with your nerdy scientist a little more. Mix and match those traits. Balance out her need to do something and be useful with that dorky need to just be a hero. She’s melted many monsters together into singular beasts, and yet she has gone into heated rants about how much she adores Mew-Mew Kissy Cutie. Let a girl be both.
So I may or may not be in the process of cooking things up.
