Sometimes I like to think to myself, like, what if ‘Undertale’ was a longer, episodic game released in a format like ‘Deltarune’? What would be the Fandom experience? What sort of speculations and memes would have popped-up if we were all slowly making our way through the story together?
Mostly this is a thought exercise to, like, keep myself humble when it comes Deltarune fan theories, reminding myself just how many pieces of the puzzle we might all be missing right now, or which totally accurate predictions might have sounded totally bonkers or grasping at straws for someone ‘stuck’ halfway through the story, or on the other hand, what kind of wild off-the-wall speculation people would have come up with because they just didn’t have all the information yet.
Y’know, there’s a lot about Undertale’s endgame that people guesses right from the Demo. Like, some people just saw this screen…
And they immediately went “this is that ‘Asgore’ guy Toriel was talking about, he’s the King of Monsterkind and Toriel’s the Queen, they divorced over their conflicting viewpoints on the issue of Killing All Humans”.
But people were also making a lot of wrong assumptions based on the thought he’d obviously be the Game’s Final Boss and a more straightforward villain. Other people had even more Wrong theories, and as someone who has watched a lot of Undertale Let’s Plays, I know a thing or two about the Weird Shit that people speculate about when they’re about halfway through the game…
Now imagine what it would be like if people didn’t... you know, got most of the whole full story in one go. What if folks just had to sit with each little snippet of plot progression for a long-ass time and speculate while we all wait for the next update. What if we had to strip every Chapter bare of any hint of what’s going to happen next and constantly debate which theories are closer or further from the truth?
Well… it would look a lot like the Deltarune Theory Scene looks like right now lol
But also sometimes I like to think about it just to imagine, like…
So assuming the ‘Waterfall Chapter’ ends right after the Undyne Battle, the Players would’ve probably noticed the recurring references to ‘Alphys’…
And they would probably be like “Ooooh, Papyrus mentioned Undyne a whole bunch, is this "Dr. Alphys" going to be the Boss of the next chapter??” Especially since references to Mettaton were far more few and far between at this point...
Folks would have probably figured out that the Ice-E Word Search foreshadows all the main areas and monsters by then…
But people would probably assume the Robot Boss of the ‘Summer’ Chapter is Alphys. They would know that she's some sort of scientist, that she's close to Undyne, people could infer that Undyne has a crush on her from her Neutral death scene... would everyone understand that she's a total Otaku and responsible for Undyne mistaking Manga for 'history books' or would the common fandom interpretation be that it's just Undyne being Undyne?
It’s just amusing to imagine what sort of Alphys Fan-Designs the community would have come up in the wait between the Waterfall and Hotland Chapters and what would be the reaction when we finally met the real Alphys.
