In Squadron Supreme 3# (cover date November, 1985), Spectrum kills Nuke in self defense. Nuke was overwhelmed with grief and rage, blaming the Squadron for the cancer related deaths of his parents. The issue also introduced Nuke's little brother Scotty Gaines and President Gardner (created by Mark Gruenwald and Bob Hall). ("Showdown", Squadron Supreme 3#, Comic, Event)

In issue 12#, the final issue of the Squadron Supreme limited series (cover date August, 1986), the group disbanded and the Utopia Project abandoned, but not till after a civil conflict brought about the deaths of Blue Eagle, Foxfire, Lamprey, Thermite, Black Archer, Nighthawk, and Pinball. It was not all death though, for the issue also saw the birth of Benjamin Thomas Jones. ("The Dregs of Victory", Squadron Supreme 12#, Comic, Event)
