As for inspiration, it's been years but I actually think the first idea came from a dream I had? I've just generally gotten into any of the wingverse AU stuff for fandoms I'm in and I was also very into the Maximum Ride books as a kid, so I think it randomly put itself together in my subconscious one night. Originally it was actually going to be Hedwig spliced with Harry (and tbh the idea of him with large fluffy white wings with those black markings has never left my mind) but I knew I wanted there to be other manifestations besides JUST wings and I couldn't figure out how he'd keep white feathers secret. Ravens were my first thought as an alternative since he's often described with raven-black hair, and thus, Avice was born.
Honestly large swaths of the story were decided early: the thing that's revealed at the end of chapter 51 was decided I think by chapter 10, I fully decided Shaw's involvement by chapter 3, and most of the rough outline by then too... Harry needed to have someone in the facility with him and it was between Charlie, Arthur, and Bill, but I ended up liking Bill as a confidant and mentor to Harry so he won (not that he gets much good his way, heh...)
The more I thought about it, the more things put themselves nicely together and I was surprised how rapidly it expanded. It went from a little wingverse fic to the longest thing I've ever written, and I still can't believe it. I'm glad you guys enjoy it as much as I've been putting it together!!! Thank you!
