Ah the utsurobune arc. it's the most. dispersed? There are multiple distinct threats. The umizatou gets a whole episode to itself.

The clogs. The hat. The raconteur. Cool boat. Kusuriuri does something outside his usual ouvre. Kayo is there.

It's unusual for the series in that the woman isn't an agent here. Oyou's been gone for 50 years. She hasn't lingered. It's not her kotowari that fuels the mononoke.

Oyou got fridged. All these decades later her brother is fueling his autobiography on her.

Don't love that he gets pretty at the end. Like. it's a nice visual indication of him having addressed his demons and like. reconstituted himself. It's a very stylised anime and Kayo's reaction suggests that 'in reality' he didn't get 3 foot taller and a totally different bone structure, but rather an expression of contented serenity or summat. But... his short-n-fatness indicated his mutilated soul? His callous cruelty and cowardice? rough.

“Utsurobune”: A UFO Legend from Nineteenth-Century Japan.  A mysterious event in Japan at the beginning of the nineteenth century shows surprising similarities with stories of UFOs.

In 1803, a round vessel drifted ashore on the Japanese coast and a beautiful woman emerged, wearing strange clothing and carrying a box. She was unable to communicate with the locals, and her craft was marked with mysterious writing. This story of an utsurobune, or “hollow ship,” in the province of Hitachi (now Ibaraki Prefecture) is found in many records of the Edo period (1603–1868), and Tanaka Kazuo, professor emeritus at Gifu University, has studied the topic for many years. Gifu University professor Tanaka Kazuo has studied the topic in detail and even written a book (under a pen name) about it titled in English The Mystery of Utsuro-bune.
