Breq's always so sure that her emotions are undetectable but she's been running that scam on easy-mode for a thousand-odd years.
It's easy to conceal reactions and emotions from those who don't expect them to matter. From those who don't see you as a person.
When she 'conceals' her reactions from the likes of Vel Osck, or Anaander, they do indeed not see her dislike or disdain or whatever.
But her Kalrs notice. Awn noticed. Seivarden notices. People who think she's a person notice when she has person reactions to things.
She takes a really, really long time to even begin to recognise the self that's reflected in others' eyes.
WHEREAS!
She ALWAYS considers herself seen and perceived by other AIs. Omaugh Station can see her basic vitals, and will apply itself to understanding them. By default.
With humans, it's enough to simply not be overt (it isn't, but it always was, before)
With AI, Breq masks much more actively, and assumes much more interest and insight.
'would you have had tea with her and personally escorted her to admin if she HADN'T been the out-of-time scion of an ancient and most-high family? If she hadn't been Seivarden Vendaai?'
Well Breq would you have stopped to save a hypothermic junkie on a backwater ice planet if it hadn't been someone you knew- if it hadn't been Seivarden Vendaai?
It is different, but I like how the book just. Leaves it there. Draws no attention to it. Lets those two scenes be in conversation across half the book

I really do wonder what is going on in the central Dyson sphere of the Radch, that hardly anyone enters, and nobody in the empire seems to know if the people in there even know about the wider Radchaai empire or even Anaander Mianaai's actions as Lord of the Radch.
Or, to summarise: what are they doing in therrrreee. What are they doinggggg.

WHA Ch 96 Spoilers
i soooo desperately want to know about tetia! given the atelier's track record, and the story's premise, i can't imagine her life beforehand wasn't at least bittersweet... and i saw this panel again which got me thinking: tetia's whole thing is about "happiness comes in twos," so would it be too on the nose for her to be a twin?
perhaps she lost her sibling and this is how she pays homage. i'm not sure how easy it is to switch mentors, i could even posit the idea that she had a previous mentor with said twin, but after the death is when tetia finds qifrey. i could be so off with this, but it's interesting to consider.
With reference to Aggot and Riche's backgrounds, I'm predicting that Tetia's past has some pain that has put a self-protective edge on her friendliness.
Riche values her autonomy very highly. This is a core character trait. But we also see that she's been through an abusive situation wherein her autonomy was deliberately and cruelly denied. With Qifrey, her demand for autonomy is in part a self-protective reaction to that prior abuse, and is actually now impeding her progress as a witch. We see her start to work through that in the second test arc.
Aggot values competence. She works very hard at magic. She has experienced people using evidence of her competence to dismiss her via claims of cheating -not just 'you can't possibly be this good', but also 'evidence that you are this good will be used to discredit you'. Her resulting obsession with proving her competence, and protecting herself from similar censure, has been quashing her genuine love of magic. She's made strides in remedying that damage in the Silver Eve arc.
Tetia is very pro people. She's very relational. She wants to be friends. She thanks people for thanking her. I think she's been abandoned. To me this reads less as a bereavement, more as a break-up. I'm thinking divorce, otherwise poor parenting, or a best friend who stopped being her friend. Maybe an orphaning, but early- the damage being more from insecure relationships than the loss of loved ones. You can't bring someone back from death with people-pleasing. But maybe you could convince them not to leave you. This time. This time no-one will leave Tetia. If she's bright enough, happy enough, friendly enough, her people will stay.
Chapter 78-97, minor moralis analyses;
So. Hats. Easthies was wearing his at the close of chap 78, when he bursts onto the page mid-spatt with Vinnana.
By open of chapter 79 he's lost it. (and his hat) He doesn't get it back.
Vinnana keeps hers until she's protected from falling masonry by Coco- and certainly doesn't have it when she takes a memory-bullet for Coco.
Lulucy is wearing her hat down in the triage room- she looses hers the instant she raises her spear against Easthies. And we see it hit the floor, it gets its own panel. The others disappear off-panel. I don't think Luluci wears her hat again for the rest of the arc, or up to chap 97.
The knights ARE all wearing circlets though. Easthies has his in 79 and 80- but not in 97. Everyone else is hatless and be-circleted.
I reckon their hat roles and their circlet roles are different. I reckon their hats have always been oddly obfuscatory for a society that claims 'brimmed hats deceptively hide the face'. Circlets hide NOTHING. They also stay on when the knights are 'at ease'. (reaching now, but also, circles do different shape language stuff to triangles)
I reckon the Pact is going to be (and always was) uphold-able without the cop nonsense, and the cop nonsense is going to be the result of a corrupted interpretation or re-working of the strictures of 'the pact'.
cos hats.
You know, there's a number of scenes with a... non-diagetic? extra-planar? hand drawing elements of the page. Like so;
(scene from chapter 80)
That's not Coco's pen.
Who's drawing here?
Earlier, before the parade of Witches in Silver Eve, there's another of these Hands from Beyond which I'm pretty sure is holding Aggot's pen.
I think this one miiight be Qifrey's?
I wonder who's telling this story.
This is the Aggot one. Definitely not the same pen as the above, at least. (last page on chapter59)

Lowkey I’d be dropkicked from the witch world in WHA so fast bc I have such a habit of doodling on myself
I wonder how many ppl the witchcops have oblivioned whose 'forbidden magic tattoos' immediately... Washed off... Because they were just doodling with ordinary ink.
Cos we know they aren't fans of due process. Or any process. Or asking one single question
new mononoke project suicide postponed

I should probably do something about that ever
i like that they never let you forget that bocchi is gross. she canonically smells like mold
she's weird she's gross. if she goes outside too long she gets nauseous and throws up on herself. she's got a good figure but has no idea how to show it off. she wears the same dirty tracksuit all day every day. if you compliment her she gets carried away and ruins it immediately. if she thinks about the future she panics, if she thinks about the past she's depressed. she's just so uncomfortable to be around. intensely awkward in the REAL way broken people are. love my fucked up daughter she's just like me. i hope she never changes
I really enjoy and am frustrated and enjoy that she's a 'tuber of some acclaim and has an actual fanbase and recognition and respect for her skills and it just. never. amounts to anything? chekov's gun remains on the mantle cos we don't really understand guns and are paralysingly afraid to ask.
Ahaha the episode of Ouran where they're cosplaying Shinsengumi hits different after watching Golden Kamuy
Does anyone else feel like the writing in the new mononoke movies lacks subtlety compared to the anime
Oh yah absolutely. Idk if the stories are simpler, but it's defo more explained.
The series explains NOTHING. Something is definitely happening but it takes very little pains to explain itself. Leaves a lot to the viewer to put together and sus out. Whereas the movies are more accessible and characters will articulate the developments and implications more clearly.
The movies also introduce characters who will 'be relevant later' and idk if that's handled especially well?
I like the movies, but I definitely love the series more. I like media that asks a lot of me, and delivers on its end. But the series is a lot, so I hope the movies can be a more accessible jumping-in point for potential converts.

Woah woah this has 1000 notes. I'm super flattered and I will bench press each and every one of you.
I can't believe you're this many notes in and nobody knows you handstitched the flag.
Oh hell was i supposed to mention that?
I handstitched the flag.
I clearly should've mentioned it sooner.
