The problem with Chapter 17...

is that it has no internal arc.

I like to think that most of the chapters I write for YJ:DW have some kind of point. Whether it be an emotion, description, information or reveal, most of the chapters have at least some small thing that they build towards.

But not this one.

Which isn’t to say that Ch. 17 is empty. There are a lot of little things it needs to do: tidying up some hanging details from Arc I, sending out the beginnings of subplot threads for Arc II proper.

It’s just that none of those things really tie to a single theme. It’s a bunch of established characters, in an established location, running through a collection of points that will become important later. It’s the literary equivalent of a flash card set. It’s the boring bottom-most layer of foundations that can’t be removed without weakening the whole darned house.

So I guess that means I’ve got to roll up my sleeves and lay some boring concrete.
