30 Days of Character Development - Day 1

Question 1 - Describe your character’s relationship with their mother or their father, or both. Was it good? Bad? Were they spoiled rotten, ignored? Do they still get along now, or no?

Born in a dank, worn down cabin on the edge of the forests on the outskirts of Le Havre, France, Patchouli was born into a one-child family of two parents. Her birthday is June 9th, yet no one seems to know the definite year, not even herself. But, she hasn't seemed to age past the appearance of eighteen, so she doesn't celebrate her birthday often. Her mother's name was Rocébella de Le'centi, and her father's name was Zacherie héritier de Knowledge. The full name of Patchouli is Patchouli de fleurir et Knowledge, taking her father's maiden name. Descended from French, Norwegian, and Caucasian descent, she now speaks with a slight hint of a French accent. Being a descendant of magickas and warlocks alike from her father, she was incorporated with the unnatural hair and eye color of purple, like many other Knowledge ancestors. Her mother and father were both equally intellect, however, both being very strict and nearly unloving. The only main time she was loved was when she was a baby, but by the age of four, things began to change drastically for Patchouli. Due to their priorities as wanting their child to be the most successful child of the entire Knowledge family chain, they went to the full extent and took every opportunity that was offered for their budget. Which, in turn, was a very low one.

Rocébella was an amateur dressmaker, though at times when it got really tough with money, she would secretly sell her body, without her husband or her daughter knowing. Zacherie was a factory worker, packaging baked goods at a conveyor belt, having abandoned the family tradition by resorting to be a regular man. At a very young age, Patchouli was already learning about her basic addition and subtraction math facts. Her father was the one who usually bombarded her with piles upon piles of textbooks, worksheets, and practice tests. By the age of six, she could repeat the multiplication facts of one, two, three, four, five, and six from heart. Not only this, but her mother was already teaching her the prospects of "being a woman". (i.e. already informing her of the pubertal stage in life, how to talk with advanced vocabulary, proper etiquette, how to respect others, how to choose words before speaking, etc.)

Even though they were teaching her 24/7 and always looking over her shoulder, they never really cared for her own well-being. They never wanted to hear about what was her opinion on getting these advanced teaching sessions. If she even said one opinion, she was beaten by her father and sent to her room for a full day without any meals or light. Due to this, the dust in her room gave her asthma and just a sickly nature in general, leaving her slightly crippled for the rest of her life. Also, due to the harshness of her parents and the abuse, she is now afraid to say anything about her own opinions and views on life. So, in the early years of her life, she never really had a childhood or love from her parents.

However, by the age of twelve, her father left her and her mother with no word spoken on why he was leaving. Despaired, her mother frantically taught her the rest of what could possibly taught until the college levels of intellect, (her punishments being more frequent and severe by this time, due to her mother's sudden depression and increased irritation) then finally abandoned Patchouli once and for all, never seeing her again. Alone in the world at the age of fourteen, she packed up of what she had and left Le Havre, and wandered all the way to a mysterious place; Gensokyo, Japan. She stumbled upon Misty Lake, where she also located the Scarlet Devil Mansion. Ambitious and slightly confident, she sought out work there, asking the Scarlet sisters if they had any work for her. Stating that they had an abandoned library in there and no one to take care of it, they rented the library to her for a couple of months. Finally, saving enough money and with much hard arguing, she bought the library and it is now her own. She now aspires to learn every single subject the world has to offer to her, and is collecting every single book in the world (still counting).
