Today was a very long day.
Everything seemed to be going against you.
You woke up 20 minutes late.
You’ve forgotten to set up your alarm the night before.
Obviously due to this set back, caused you to arrive to work late.
Usually your boss was a strict but understanding man, but today something must have been stressing him for he blew up in your face about your tardiness.
Sure, it wasn’t the first time this has happened to you, but when it did, it was far in between of one another.
Unfortunately, due to his mood, he decided to deduct your pay for the month.
Which means that you would have to starve for a couple of days in order to pay for the rest of this month’s bills.
But on the bright side of it all, you still had a job.
Yay.
The rest of the day consisted of you dealing with demanding customers at the coffee shop that you work at.
Around 2 pm, you left your job and headed to your second job, a call support center for a small business revolving the selling of musical instruments.
This of course was the one job out of the two, that you hated the most. It made you realize how lazy and ignorant people are when their “problems” could be solved by simply reading the manual that came with each instrument. Sometimes people even called asking for things that don’t even relate to the product at all.
Like for today as an example.
You had a man called in, asking for some girl named Jenni.
You politely told him that he had the wrong number, the first few times he called. But on the seventh time he called, you had it with the clingy imbecile.
He repeated his statement that if you were sure that this wasn’t her number because she wasn’t the type of girl to lie to him. He kept saying how they shared special moments together.
As if you were going to lie about something like this and make your life difficult by talking to an obsessive idiot who obviously couldn’t understand that this Jenni chick played him and lied about her number, probably to get away from his peanut sized brain and dick. In what forsaken way would that benefit you?
Wrongly, you told him this and apparently it struck a nerve for he started to curse at you.
But hey, at least he stopped calling after that.
You finished your job at 10pm and hopped on a train to head back home.
Apparently you were more tired then you thought for you fell asleep on the way, resulting in you missing your stop.
Fortunately, it was only by 2 stops, which meant it was still walking distance…if you consider 5 miles to be walking distance.
Honestly that was about the distance away from your job at the call center to your apartment, which meant you wasted money on transportation.
Sometimes, you hated how life worked.
You walked most of the way there with your heels on until it started to cause you pain. The rest of the way you walked bare-footed while ignoring the stares that were thrown your way.
After an hour, you finally arrived at the apartment.
You dragged your swollen aching feet through the door, only to pause as you were putting your dress shoes on the shoe rack when you noticed the empty spot besides yours.
You checked your wrist watch.
It was 11:10pm, which meant that your roommate would be coming back within an hour or so.
You sighed heavily.
All you wanted to do was to soak in a bath and sleep away this bad day.
But your roommate would most likely be hungry after coming back from his crazy busy schedule.
So you dragged yourself to the kitchen to make some fish soup and rice for him to eat.
After cleaning up and setting the food on the table, you finally were able to relax in your warm bath. You thought of what happened as your aching muscles started to relax.
It will get better tomorrow.
It was only when you started to nod off that you decided to get out and head to sleep.
You had just dressed yourself and were climbing into your bed when you heard the front door of the apartment slamming shut.
You froze due to the unexpected noise, tensing with a million thoughts racing through your head. You only started to relax when you glanced at the clock.
Ah.......It’s okay……It’s only him.
You considered ignoring what had happened and go to bed, since it was getting late for you, and texting him in the morning but you might have a better chance in dealing with this problem now than later.
You walked out of your room and decided that it most likely he was in the kitchen eating the food you made for him, so you made your way towards there only to pause at the hallway where the entrance to the apartment was.
His shoes were tossed on the floor. His spot at the shoe rack was left untouched.
You let out an irritated sigh.
You walked into the kitchen to find your roommate and childhood friend, Sungyeol grabbing a glass of water, his back facing you.
“Sungyeol,” you said, trying to grab his attention.
He ignored you.
Well. Hi to you too.
“Sungyeol,” you stressed out his name, letting him know that you’re not here to be ignored.
He simply grunted as his response and brought the glass to his lips. It wasn’t much, but it would be the best you would get right now.
“Sungyeol, you know my room is close to the door, so I would appreciate it that you don’t slam it close on your way here. Especially seeing as you know how I feel about loud noises.”
He turned to face you and stared into your eyes for a moment, but then turned his attention back to his glass of water.
That was enough confirmation for you to know that he was sorry.
He never was the type to apologize so upfront. Instead he would apologize through his actions.
Something you have learned by the many years you were friends with him.
“Another thing,” you said trying to bring back the attention to you instead of his water. He didn’t remove his eyes from the glass, but you decided to speak your mind anyways.
“Go fix your shoes. I’m not going to do it anymore. I’ve told you this. I’m not your maid to be picking up after yourself,” you said as you crossed your arms under your chest.
This was one of your pet peeves.
You always felt like he didn’t really consider your feelings and would simply ignore what you said simply because on those rare times when you complained about something, you always stated it passively. Always saying “please,” “if you can,” “I would appreciate it if”.
But he never took you seriously. He never listened. He never really cared enough.
He never did.
“Not now, [y.n.],”he muttered through his glass as he blankly stared at the wall behind you, refusing to meet your glare.
It’s always the same old tune.
You were tired of it.
You wanted it to change.
It is now or never.
“Not now?,” you quoted back rather breathlessly.
“If not now, then when Sungyeol? Should we set an appointment within your schedule? Will you listen to me then? I have given you plenty of times to do something about the things that have been bothering me. But what always happens? Nothing. Nothing ever changes because you simply don’t give a damn about what I say.”
It felt as if a dam broke. All the repressed emotions and thoughts were starting to break free. The small leak on the wall has torn open due to the overwhelming pressure of water, pushing on it. There was no stopping it until it becomes completely empty.
“Sungyeol… You have no idea how grateful I am to you for finding me after all these years separated and opening your home when I had absolutely nothing, risking your status as an idol. Your dream. I am so grateful that could die for you. If needed, I will die for you.
But the question is why?
Why did you do it?
Why would you open your home to me if it’s obvious that you wanted to live alone?
Because you care and were worried about me?
Obviously that isn’t it.
Ever since I have moved in here, we hardly talk to each other unless it is absolutely needed. It’s like we have become strangers…
Is it because of what happened to me when you weren’t there by my side? Is it….Are you…
Are you ashamed of me being your friend?”
A loud slam of glass meeting wood stilled you.
Suddenly, you couldn’t breathe.
You couldn’t control the trembling of your hands.
Itsokayitsokayitsokayitsokayitsokayitsnothingitsnothingnothingnothing……….
With a rather unsteady inhalation and exhalation of breathe, your glazed eyes tried focusing the source of the sound.
The glass. The table. Sungyeol.
Sungyeol is good.
He is your friend…..
He is good.
He’s my friend…
It’s only Sungyeol.
My friend…?
Sungyeol had slammed the glass on the table.
You kept yourself tensed, ready for anything, like a wild frightened animal. Your wide eyes took in every movement that Sungyeol took.
Sungyeol noticed your look.
An indescribable and unknown expression flashed through his face before he bowed his head and stared at the ground.
He was apologizing.
At this action, you instantly relaxed.
Suddenly you felt so drained of energy. You had no willpower to continue your confrontation with Sungyeol. If you being honest to yourself, all you wanted was to sleep for a long time. Maybe even for an eternity.
You just stood there zoning out, lost in your thoughts, while Sungyeol still had his head bowed and eyes on the ground.
Suddenly, you felt a heavy weight on your head.
Startled, you looked up only to find Sungyeol right in front of you with his hand resting on top of your head.
You bewilderedly stared at him.
You frowned and were about to swat his hand off of your head when you remembered this was something he always did when both of you were kids.
----
Sungyeol had always been tall all his life. And you hated this fact.
Well, it more due to the fact that Sungyeol always teased you for being short.
Which was ridiculous because you weren’t even that short!
You were always just a few centimeters under average height.
“Below average means you’re short, shortie,” he would tease and lay his hand on your head as if to emphasize his point whenever you tried arguing with him before ruffling your hair roughly and laughing at his ‘artwork’ he made by messing up your hair.
Damn those freakishly tall giants.
----
You smiled at the memory and glanced at Sungyeol who also had a small smile present on his face, seemingly remembering the same memory.
You were ready for the rough hair treatment to happen, but it never came.
Instead, he started to gently pat your hair.
The unexpected action caused you to become flustered visibly which only made his smile to widen.
“What are you do-“
“You look exhausted. You should go get some sleep,” Sungyeol interrupted you, still patting your hair.
“I’ll call your work and explain that you’re too sick to work tomorrow, so you can sleep in,” Sungyeol continued.
“Wha? No, why? I have to go to work. I already got scolded by the boss today too, since I came to work late. I don’t want to get fired.” You moved your head out his reach to make him stop patting your head as you stared at him confusedly.
“Don’t worry. I’ll handle it,” he smiled reassuringly bringing his hand to his side, “Besides, I don’t have anything booked tomorrow so I have a free day. And I thought we could spend the day together and talk.”
That caught you off guard.
Sungyeol wanted to hang out like old times and talk?
No…I shouldn’t have my hopes to high. He’ll just make me do all the talking like usual. And nothing will change as an outcome.
“I’ll talk,” he said seriously, picking up your thoughts through your facial expressions, staring confidently into your eyes.
After a few seconds, you smiled.
He meant what he said.
“C’mon,” he said as he ruffled your hair and moved to exit the kitchen, “we should head off to bed. It’s late.”
You stood there in a daze, not really sure whether this was reality or the afterlife, for you were sure that you drowned while taking a bath. Such good tidings don’t happen in your life, so you must be dead.
The sound of a door closing snapped you back into reality.
The door wasn’t slammed.
It was closed normally.
That made you feel immensely happy.
You walked towards your bedroom, lost in your thoughts of what tomorrow would bring, when you took notice something in the corner of your eye.
You paused at the hallway leading to the front door and smiled.
Tomorrow will be a great day.
You had a smile plastered on your face for the whole night.
And there at the hallway where the shoe rack was at, was that once empty space besides yours being filled.
