Yeah, they both needed glasses. Voltaire didn't, although there are some letters where he says his eyesight is failing, but then he doesn't mention it again. So I'm assuming it was a temporary symptom of some illness he was dealing with at the time. Like when he said he lost his hearing at some point in the 1740s and then it got better. He over exaggerates. Mentally stronger? Idk I'd say they're all pretty mentally strong. Robespierre's a lawyer turned public politician during a revolution. Voltaire was a renowned celebrity polymath with enemies across Europe. In both cases, I feel like it boils down to the level of social climbing and career success they had that proves some sort of mental fortitude. In Sade's case, I mean, he's been through a lot in terms of a 13 year imprisonment and bouts of solitary confinement. He certainly lost his mind a bit in the Bastille and Vincennes. So he's probably the most mentally unstable of the three, but not a complete wreck.
