Dean was enlisted sometime between 1958 or 59, perhaps later depending on the story. He was in the service for a year before driving over a mine which killed two of the people in his jeep and damaged his lower leg badly.
The man behind him survived with minimal injuries and attempted to stop the bleeding in his right leg before being shot by enemy soldiers. Dean was beneath his body for hours before the rest of his unit was able to find him.
Despite major blood loss, Dean made it to a M*A*S*H unit alive where Major Charles Emerson Winchester was forced to remove the lower half of his leg. Dean stayed at the M*A*S*H unit for two weeks before being shipped back to a military hospital, where he was transferred to Rockwell general.
Although this material is subject to change, this is the general storyline I will stick with unless a plotline requires otherwise.
