Ten-lined June Beetle inspo resulted in his ability of flaring antennae out and his having some softer fuzzy areas not just armor.
Firefly inspo provided my excuse that his yellow bioluminescence has communicative tendencies related to his moods/feelings. They flicker, they dim, they glow brightly.
His core magic however will cause a faint glow on rare occasions, like a translucent coating, rather than a biological effect.
He is a burrower and his home is underground, with magic crystals providing warm lighting among earthy walls. Lives on outskirts rather than crowded central area of his hive for the sake of peace during off time from healing.
Combines a certain amount of magic with natural remedies, spider webbing for bandages, actual surgery, and so on. Due to being born in the wilds away from a hive, however, he is somewhat behind in magical knowledge compared to hands-on healing, but with age, he continues to learn and develops a skilled balance between the two.
Beetles will vibrate things. It can be aggressive or flirting. I’ll let you guess which is usually the case for Ratch.
Tries to hibernate. Is extremely moody if he has to get up during the winter for an emergency. Goes back to bed as soon as possible afterward because it’s cold okay.
{ here’s a beetle ready for upcoming winter, having a nice autumn-vibe meanwhile

Coming from outside an established society, outside of a ‘hive,’ made integration into an established culture feel... strange, even after seasons of learning and working within one. He understood many customs or habits, and several he had accepted, but others... He doubted he would ever get used to certain ones.
Hunting, for example, remained an unpleasant concept to him. He was aware the nutritional aspect was needed for some fae varieties, and that it was customary in some circles, but his opinion (and his deep frown upon hearing it mentioned) had never changed.
Ratchet’s striped armored back opened briefly, allowing his wings to shift and refold themselves, before becoming hidden again. He might go home soon, or perhaps visit Rung a while. Either would be better than continuing to overhear commentary related to the ‘sport’ from others passing or visiting the infirmary.
{ seems like a good time to talk about fae hcs:
Spent life on and in the ground as grub for quite a while because it takes much longer for some to reach their metamorphosis period, but it also allowed for maturing and learning before he ever changed.
Still a strong armored healer, and absolutely none of you should be surprised by that but I’ll say it anyway.
Territorial, which is a normal trait but it’s amplified. Often hisses if you touch him, his stuff, or stay in his personal space without permission.
FUZZY upper body, even under wings.
His areas of yellow bioluminescence can be communicative, like its firefly inspiration. A slow winking expresses contentment, bright constant glowing expresses positive emotions, flickering can indicate curiosity, no light means he’s depressed or grumpy, etc.
Has been known to throw other faes if he’s ticked off, although it’s typically harmless because they can fly and recover mid air. Mostly just a physical way of saying go away.
Antennae can flare out on the ends.

Camouflage was not one of the beetle’s strengths. In addition to speckles of yellow bioluminescence scattered across his form, his white plates reflected moonlight. So, he was not surprised to learn a stranger had noticed him before he noticed him. He stared at KnockOut briefly, but upon noting he was only a moth smaller than him, Ratchet’s gaze returned to his hands as he resumed collecting tree sap.
