"No, mom. We'll be good," Jason replied, fake petulant, a shit eating grin spreading on his face as he half giggled at his own joke. He wasn't actually planning any mischief, not yet, but he was in a somehow mischievous mood and a quick glance at Riley, out of the corner of his eye, told him he wasn't the only one. It was just one of those days.

His gaze fell on Grant's packed belongings and he sobered up a little as reality hit him. His brother was going to be away for over two months and, while Jason was old enough to be self-sufficient and watch over Riley, his absence was going to be noticed.

"Seriously though," he added, his tone softening. "We're gonna be fine."

There is no finesse in the way Jason drops in the chair in front of his sister. He's sluggish, dizzy with an hangover induced headache and he reaches for Sabine's own cup of coffee, drowns half of it in one go before she can even think of protesting. "That's a weird way to say I can't get a girlfriend."

He debates eggs, avocado toast but he's in no condition to cook, so he just sets for grabbing a mug from the cupboard and filling it with cornflakes and milk. Cornflakes. It's fun, because isn't cornflakes supposed to be an anti-aphrodisiac? Jason is pretty sure he read something somewhere about whoever invented them meaning to cure masturbation. If that’s the case, maybe Sabine's strategy of sticking to cornflakes has some science behind it. Probably not, though.

"You can have mine, if you want," he eventually says around a mouthful. "I'm starting to think it's not worth the hassle."

Jason is turning 16 and, for the very first time, Grant won't be there to celebrate his birthday (little does he know that his brother won't be there for his 26th birthday either, or for any birthday after that). That makes him sad, so sad that he has no choice but to party harder, cheer louder as he unwraps the gifts his friends got for him (and he's genuinely excited at the perspective of playing Devil May Cry 2), drink more, kiss more people.

After the sun goes down, the few of them that have been allowed to spend the night head out to the desert beach in what ends up being a demanding drunkenly trip. They skinny dip in the still too chilly water. Jason ends up snogging a girl he met a week prior, feeling so loved he might cry when she cradles his face in her hands so gently and later, once back to the safety of Ollie's mansion, he fools around with a friend and his girlfriend. He falls asleep between the two of them and wakes up still drunk the morning after, his nose running with the beginning of a cold.

It's epic and still it doesn't compare to the sheer joy he feels as he stumbles through the door of his house a few hours later, more hungover than he's ever been in his entire life (more than he ever will be), and finds Grant waiting for him. Not even the scolding he gets for his pitiful state ruins his high mood.

Jason is 18 and, as he dashes past the finish line, he feels high with the adrenaline pumping in his veins. He looks around for a moment as he struggles to catch his breath, as he wills his shaky legs not to collapse and he knows that, even if he didn't score first place, he still did pretty good. As he's patted on the back and pulled in sweaty hugs, his eyes search the bleachers until he spots his girlfriend up there and Ollie next to her. They're beaming down at him, cheering and Jason almost feels like a superhero; he's on top of the world.

The party is still raging but up there on the rooftop of the Carswell mansion everything is still, quiet except for the distant booming of the bass. Jason takes a drag of his joint, swings his free arm around Oliver's shoulder on the exhale.

It's something that not many people get to see, this side of him, and Jason feels lucky that he does, even if it's only on occasions. "You too," he replies earnestly, tearing his eyes off of the lights of the city above to look his friend in the eyes. "Fuck everybody else. Let's go to my place and order some Taco Bell."

Jason shakes his head, uselessly wiping at his stained shirt. "It's not worth it, okay?" he replies, putting a placating hand around Keith's bicep. "Grant's gonna murder me if has to bail me out again."

Usually, it's Ollie that gets them out of trouble when needed. In LA his father's name is granted to open many doors, including cell doors, but that's not a good excuse to get in trouble when it can be avoided, especially over something as silly as a spilled drink. Besides, Ollie isn't there tonight, it's just the two of them.

"I appreciate it though, you offering to defend my honor," he adds, putting the one drink he managed to salvage down on the table for them to share. "If Liza ends up dumping me after tonight, you can go fight her."

A shiver runs down his spine and Jason lets out a little, breathy laugh. After how long has it been, Liza is full of surprises, still. It takes but a second and Jason's mind is already running amok, fantasizing about what it would be like to feel the rope (Handcuffs? Zip ties?) cut into the skin of his wrists as Liza's soft, perfectly manicured hand runs down his stomach, all the way to his-
