“The only way?! Are you fucking kidding me right now!?!?” Tony’s fist came down hard and the glass cracked under the force. Display flickering and he quickly shifted the display to the side before he lost visual completely.

“You don’t even know where they are! I lost one kid already and now the other one hopped a flight out with the damn Rogers’ twins and probably won’t make it back. You have no idea what you’re up against! You’re parents are a wreck right now... all of us. And I---”

His chest went tight, suddenly finding it very hard to breathe and the tingle in his arm shouldn’t have come as a surprise but it did. The whole point of running off batteries was that you would last a while longer. “Fuck. Enjoy space.” Tony cut off the monitor and pulled out his phone, dialing Mel before sinking back into  his chair. “Our kid is an idiot and you should probably get me to a hospital.”

He wasn’t supposed to be here, and yet somehow Tony was glad that he wasn’t alone when it happened. That he wasn’t stuck back at the tower or in the workshop watching monitors. He was glad that in those final moments EJ would have someone there and not have to face this horror alone. Glad, of course, being a relative term.

“Hey-- hey, it’s fine buddy, you’re okay,” choked words hiccuping from his chest. Pete’s remains still fresh on his jacket and pretty soon his own kid would be there too. But Tony wouldn’t let him go, not ever. And he would fix this; because that’s what he does, right? He fixes things. And then he fucks them up again and now they are in this shit storm of a situation that involves the thing he is most afraid of unraveling before his eyes.

And all he can do is watch.

Shaky fingers drift through the hair on the back of EJ’s head, keeping the kid safe and tucked into his father’s chest. Same as he did when he was little and afraid, providing some amount of last moment comment. “I’m here, Edwin, I got you. I got you (now and always).”

Escaping from his bedroom had been easy; he had just waited until he was sure his mom was sleeping or busy with paperwork. Either way, it had been quiet and he had managed to sneak down to find his dad.

EJ laid his head on his father’s shoulder as soon as he was picked up, still not entirely tired but his dad was comfortable.

“Yeah,“ there had been too much going on in the youngest Stark’s brain for him to try to fall asleep when his mom had put him to bed. Once Tony laid down with him, EJ nestled into his chest and pillowed his head near the reactor, his fingers resting lightly against the light coming from his father’s chest. There was a quiet giggle over the comment about his mom taking pictures once he was comfortable.

“Iron Man suits.“

Oh, the pictures would come. Plastered all over the fridge and used as the background for anything remotely techy. If it involved Tony and EJ having a chance, adorable and candid moment...there was photographic proof. 

He hummed, pulling up the blankets until they were both covered, fingers moving up and down the youngest Stark’s back. It helped Tony get to sleep, even now, maybe it would help EJ as well. 

“Okay- easy enough. Mark I, Mark II, Mark III--” Tony paused, brow lifting, chin lowering as far as it would go so he could look at his son. “You do know we’re gonna be counting for a while, right? J could just put on cartoons.”

He was sprawled out on the couch when she walked in. Shoes kicked off and an arm folded behind his head. Nothing playing on any screens, no music, just sweet, sweet silence. Alone with his thoughts, a mixture of preparing for this new baby and his worry for Mira.

If she didn’t stop, she’d find herself in an early grave, and he wasn’t in anywhere prepared to deal with that. Some part of him had hoped that with a new sibling in the mix, she would calm it down a little. Little did he know how wrong he was.

“You know, it’s genetic, I should have seen this coming years ago,” he spoke, knowing she was there but doubting she’d take any of it to heart. He watched his father turn to the liquor cabinet more than he actually ate, Tony had been the same way until his little Afghan vacation, and now it was happening to his little girl. “Even worse, is you’re going to end up killing yourself and I won’t be able to do a damn thing about it.”

Tony remembered, clear as day the first time EJ had cried and specifically went for Tony. Of course, he loved both his parents, but there would always be a part of him that was stupidly happy that his kid needed him. It also probably had a lot to do with the small shock the kid gave himself trying to rewire the battery in his kiddie car, but that was besides the point.

And here he was, all grown up, his own suit. Someone to take over the name after all these years of do-gooding and Tony couldn’t have been prouder. Afraid, but proud. As any parent would be for their kid’s first mission. 

It was hell that week, sitting stationary behind a desk, watching as the younger generation stepped in and took charge. Yeah, it was still him and Steve behind the controls, but they had ambition. He flinched the first time EJ was hit, knew the suit could take it, but knowing and watching were two different things. Tried not to be too much a dad and scold him over the comms. 

But when they got back, a little worse for wear, but alive and well, and what started as a fond grasp of his shoulder had quickly turned into a full on embrace. Arms awkwardly wrapped around the suit and a hand clasped on the back of EJ’s neck. “You did good, buddy. Real good.”

“I know. I just…got caught up in the moment. I got the ring and I didn’t want anyone else in the family tipping her off before I could ask. I wanted to surprise her…“ and yes, he was aware of how stupid it could have been to surprise the girl with a heart condition. Maybe he should have talked to his father first, let him know but all he thought about was worrying that the answer might have been no. And it nearly had been.

“But I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner.“ There was a smile when Tony mentioned what his new fiance had done to try to make it up to him. “Did it work?“

“Anyone else? Your mom…well, I honestly don’t know if she would have spilled, but your sister…okay, I can see that. But, really, EJ, I’m a steel trap when it comes to family secrets.” He was glad that EJ had found someone that made him happy, who could give him a happy life, a family. And it helped that she was Steve and Bex’s kid, none of that worrying if the girl that was stealing his kid from under him was good enough.

“Of course it worked, I’ve grown weak in my old age.” Tony smirked, clapping a hand over his son’s shoulder and pulling him in for a tight squeeze. “So I suppose I owe you a congratulations or whatever.”

He settled into his father’s lap, making himself comfortable as Tony pulled up the J.A.R.V.I.S interface. Little eyes widened as it appeared in front of him along with the similar one for him to design himself. Tentatively, he reached out and touched it, watched as it shifted for him. Listening to the explanation, EJ nodded, still mesmerized by the framework that would be used to create his own system. “I wanna do it,“ the answer was just as soft. “Help?“

Dropping a kiss to EJ’s hair with a small chuckle, Tony gives the interface a spin, pulling out the base programming and giving his son a nudge to his ribs. “Okay kiddo, you think you can find the foundation and copy it to stick in yours.” Reaching into the drawer beside them, Tony pulled out a tablet and placed it in front of the boy. “Go ahead, give it a try.”
