To say the last two years had been an adjustment for Dean was an understatement, but when he looked down at his little girl he knew there was nothing more worth everything than seeing her smile. Which, was the cheesiest thing he’d never thought he’d say.
It took him months to recover physically, but emotionally he still wasn’t there- he could fake it pretty well and Lauren made it easy, work kept him distracted but his mother noticed and after many insistence's, he finally took her advice and took a week off of work to explore the city he’d moved into two years ago with his child. He never had to go anywhere: Lauren’s childcare was intercompany, their doctor was a block away, she didn’t need to go a million places (yet), and so most of his free time was spent with her at home.
And that, as his mom pointed out and won her way, was why he was sitting on a bus to downtown with a highly upset toddler. She had never experienced such things and he could only hope the trip to the zoo and city park wouldn’t be terrible for both of them. None of her toys seemed to calm her down and he could feel the annoyed stares of the other passengers as he tried to rock her in his lap.
