BACKSTORY:
Shimura Tenko was born in the 1600s. His family was rather wealthy and their name was well-known where they lived. Tenko was a sickly child and often suffered abuse from his father (both emotionally and physically) which further worsened his condition. When Tenko was four, a fire broke out in the house and killed all of his family. His mother managed to get him out but died when she ran back inside to grab his sister.
For several days, Tenko wandered the streets. Despite his family’s good name, none of the people around him extended a helping hand. Tenko suffers from survivor’s guilt and soon after gives up on finding help. However, it is then that a man comes to his aid. He introduces himself as Sensei, a doctor, and takes him on as a son. He also changes Tenko’s name to Shigaraki Tomura, to make the connection between them more believable.
Tomura soon realizes the true nature of his savior when Sensei begins to feed from him, but Tomura has no means of escape. Part of him thinks this to be the Gods’ punishment for outliving his family, which is why he eventually comes to accept his fate. He helps Sensei find new “patients” and serves as a food resource for both Sensei and the people he turned. This continues until Tomura turns 20. Sensei turns him as a means of gratitude for his service, as well as to start teaching him to take over the empire he created.
200 years later, Sensei falls victim to an infamous vampire hunter. While he doesn’t die fully, he can no longer regenerate and is unable to communicate. The vampire hunter ends up in a similar state. Sensei’s empire fell with his defeat, and Tomura is left with a select few subordinates who are willing to follow his command. The others either died during the confrontation or don’t deem Tomura worthy of taking on the mantle of Sensei.
Tomura isn’t interested in continuing Sensei’s ways and instead roams the lands freely; sometimes alone, sometimes with his followers. Though he gets into fights with other vampires, also Sensei’s former followers, Tomura is content. For the first time in his life, he can do however he pleases and needn’t listen to anyone but himself.
