Qiupalong was an ornithomimosaur known only from a partial skeleton, but based on that skeleton its distinctness as a separate ornithomimid genus has been pinpointed. It was very similar to both Struthiomimus and Ornithomimus, even though both were from North America and Qiupalong was from China. Specifically, it was found in the Qiupa Formation in the Henan Province, dating back to the Late Cretaceous. It is the southernmost known ornithomimid in Late Cretaceous Asia and is the first Asian ornithomimid known outside of the Gobi Desert.
