"Dr. Nasi?" She'd turned herself around three times on her way down here, but now that she was there, she pushed all of her courage into knocking. And then, mercifully, the door was open and there was no more turning back. "I- I think something's happening to me. A curse, or something. Or maybe- maybe there's something wrong with my potions or how I'm reacting to them? And I know I should go to the hospital wing, but I don't know how to explain it and I don't- I don't want people to know." She sunk into one of the chairs and immediately hid her face in her hands, looking terribly distraught, but embarrassed most of all. "Especially if I'm wrong."

Harry hated this. Remus having to leave because of prejudice and a single accident? That was really bad, but on top of what had happened with Sirius--what he'd been offered and then had snatched away... "Professor? I... I wanted to ask you something else. I don't know if you can do anything about it." He ducked his head a little, obviously uncomfortable, and bit his lip before continuing. "Nobody else has. But... I really don't want to go back to the Dursleys. Professor Dumbledore says I'm safe there, but... Maybe it is safe from Voldemort, I don't know. But it's not safe. And I don't really understand why he's in charge of where I stay, and... Is there anything you can do?"

Harry had had a hard time being around Ron for the same kinds of long stretches that he had before their falling out earlier that year, no matter than they'd made up. Since the unfortunate discovery that he was expected to find a date to a ball (an incredibly intimidating prospect, considering he'd never even had the chance to go to a dance or a party before, excluding the Gryffindor victory parties), his tolerance for the Gryffindor common room had waned even further. At least most of the taunts and glares he received outside the tower had little to do with him getting a date or dancing or having to prove he could do those things in front of people. Tonight, it was clear enough that he'd been flying lowly around the quidditch pitch, his books left forgotten in the stands.

When he saw he wasn't alone, he swooped down and gave her a smile. "Hi, Luna. What brings you down here?"

Harry couldn't handle this. He couldn't handle any of it. His godfather was dead and Voldemort had tried to possess him and he'd spent most of the year being assaulted by two different teachers and he was being dumped back at the Dursleys' with nothing.

He couldn't live like this.

Mr. Weasley,

It's maybe a little odd that I'm writing to you directly, but I'm- well. I'm asking you to come rescue me. I know Professor Dumbledore says I have to stay here for part of the summer, but it can't be this part.

I don't know if I'll survive it.

I know that seems overdramatic but I mean it. I need to get out of here. If you could help at all... I'd appreciate it.

It was a messy letter, with bits scribbled out and a couple marks of blurred ink that looked suspiciously like tears marring the surface of the parchment, but there wasn't anything for it. He already knew his friends wouldn't help him this summer, and running away hadn't gotten him far the last time he'd tried it.

"Happy Christmas, Harry." Ginny smiled, a little shyly, but mostly just brightly, and handed him a small, rectangular gift wrapped in silver paper.

Open Starter: Harry

One of the biggest disadvantages of having an invisibility cloak was that it made sneaking off to sulk far too easy. This was the third time this week that he'd found himself sitting on top of one of one of the castle's many towers well after curfew.

He glanced sharply over his shoulder when he heard a sound, then relaxed and turned back around. "How'd you find me?"

A gift of chocolates sit waiting for Harry. With a card that said: "I do hope you make the best of your birthday. For it maybe your last. V"

He should absolutely throw those chocolates away. Even if the V just stood for Romilda Vane rather than the far more manacing option, she'd been trying to feed him love potions since she was twelve. And it could be much worse than that. Still, he was stuck with his miserable relatives again and he hadn't seen a full meal in two days now, let alone chocolate. And he was feeling abandoned and self-destructive, so sue him.

Harry ate one of the chocolates.

Malfoy was there. Malfoy was there and Malfoy was crying. Harry had seen children crying, but he hadn’t seen a boy his age crying in a couple years, and he’d never even imagined that Malfoy would be capable. It was surreal. And a little bit scary. And incredibly disorienting. 

He went on guard for a minute, but when he dodged the (honestly pretty pathetic) crucio, he couldn’t think of anything to send back. And now Malfoy was crying harder and he... He dropped his wand arm down to hang loosely at his side. “Y’know, it’s kind of rude to throw unforgivable curses at people who happen to walk in on you in the loo. Are you... Are you okay?” He took an awkward step closer, not feeling as though he were in any danger at all now, despite the very not good curse Malfoy had thrown just a moment ago.
