A stubborn, anti-social man from the Canadian Rockies. He loves the wilderness and works for the forestry department, but strongly distrusts the government. He regularly disobeys his orders, such as intentionally spreading invasive species instead of removing them, believing it is morally right to let the Earth reclaim industrialized land at any cost.
He meets Greenburg while landscaping the church’s property during a storm, and is surprised when he offers him help. He finds himself charmed rather quickly by Greenburg’s similarly eccentric views, and is reminded of the (also eastern european) community from his childhood. They discuss religion and social philosophy, and after the two talk Greenburg extends his mission trip to stay with Paul at his cabin for several months. When he finally leaves to continue seeking divine power abroad, Paul eventually follows him.
Paul was formerly married to Charlotte, who met through a shared department project and bonded over their shared ambitious drives. The two still get along well and maintain a flirtatious friendship, but separated due to lifestyle differences. Their daughter Maple spent more time with Paul as a small child and have similar personalities- both enjoy the outdoors. She has memory issues and has been mostly in Charlotte’s custody as she gets older, so the two are no longer close.
He also lives part time with his other family members/headmates, who are all familiar to anyone he is close with.
