Art - Picasso and the beach The beach was always Picasso’s Arcadia, amid the freedoms of the 1920’s he mythologised the beach in paintings including ‘Two women running on the beach’, ‘On the beach’ and ‘Large bather with a book’ amongst others. But aside from his paintings it was Picasso himself who gave visual form to the modern hedonism of la plage. It was in the 1920’s that the French Riviera became the image of sultry decadence, a fabled resort playground for the rich and famous, of endless sunshine, azure waters and center of creativity for artists and writers including Scott Fitzgerald, Hemingway and Cocteau. Picasso would decamp to the South of France every year and did so for all of his life. Prior to the arrival of Picasso and the likes the concept of ‘sunbathing’ did not exist. Picasso lived the last 12 years of his life in Mougin a short drive to Cannes the hedonistic Riviera and la plage . . . .
