I’ve watched “A Chorus Line” musical and it was pretty great! It’s a musical telling about an audition in a chorus after the first musical number and lots of dancing, seventeen applicants were chosen. Then rather than dancing and singing the director made them talk about themselves their life, their childhoods and their feelings. They are all very different – boys and girls, two of them are gay, some of them are people of colour (Puerto-Rican, black, Chinese), many of them had difficult childhoods and problems with parents. They all sing about their experiences – by one and together. They all are very nervous to talk about it; they prefer to act than to tell somebody about their personal life. The problem is that the show only requires four boys and four girls for the chorus – so the director has to choose. (Spoilers!) One of the girls is his ex-girlfriend, who he thinks is too good for the chorus. One of the boys is way too shy to talk about his life in front of everybody so he has to speak to the director privately and this episode, even though it’s not a song (which is very strange for a musical), is one of the most, if not the most, moving and touching moments – he talks about his sexuality, his dancing experience and participating in a drag show, and also about his parents and their reaction. Later, while performing a dance number this boy has problems with his knee (which he had surgery on) so he’s to be taken to a doctor. This incident provokes the director’s question: What will you do when you are not able to dance anymore? Well, anyway he chose eight people for the chorus and the show ends with their performance. I liked that musical very much: the music is very good, there are also a lot of dance numbers (in some of which dancers try to pretend that they can’t dance properly)!
