Myr Mortals vs Valakut Dredge
Once again, the arena was mostly empty as I entered. There were a few casual duels going on, but it was pretty dead other than that. After stopping for a moment to watch somebody cast Temur Battle Rage on their Niv Magus Elemental, I made myself available for a duel.
The opponent that showed up was in the guise of a colorful bird. For some reason, these are fairly common around here. We greeted each other politely, then called our spells and mana bonds to our minds. My mind was a bit of a mess, so I rearranged my thoughts and was satisfied with how they came out. My opponent took the first turn and bonded with a Stomping Grounds. This rough neighborhood from the plane of Ravnica damaged him as it materialized on the battlefield, but he was able to immediately use the mana to summon an Insolent Neonate. The haughty vampire from the plane of Innistrad sat there looking bored for the time being. I bonded with a swamp and passed the turn. The opponent connected with a mountain, then started a strange ritual. First, I saw the spirit of a dragon whispering into his ear, then suddenly, his graveyard started filling up with dead creatures and used up spells. Finally, he sent the vampire in to attack me. Fortunately, it was pretty weak as far as vampires go and only managed to scratch me.
I bonded with another swamp, then used my black mana to summon a Leaden Myr. The little robot seemed to be at home among the swamps that had manifested on my side of the field. As the little myr was discovering its new surroundings, I saw my opponent kill the Neonate and toss it into the graveyard, continuing the earlier ritual. Again the graveyard continued to fill up. I knew that this was something to worry about, and that I would need to act fast if I was going to survive the coming onslaught. As this was going on, the opponent bonded with a Steam Vents.
Knowing that I needed a much bigger army of robots quickly, I bonded with another swamp and put all my mana into a Myr Reservoir. This artifact would go a long way to getting the assembly line rolling. Unfortunately for me, I was nearly out of time. I massive volcano rose up on the on the other side of the battlefield, and I recognized it as Valakut, The Molten Pinnacle. My opponent then cast a spell called Mystic Retrieval, and I saw arcane energies fly from the graveyard directly into the opponent’s head. The little bird was now flying around with a cloud of dark energy emanating from it.
Seeing that the end was nigh, I used all of my power along with help from the Leaden Myr and the Myr Reservoir to summon the mighty Myr Battlesphere. This amalgamation of robots would make quick work of the opponent if I could just survive long enough. Unfortunately for me, my opponent cast Splendid Reclimation. All of the mana bonds that they had been tossing into their graveyard suddenly manifested on the battlefied, causing Valakut to have a massive eruption. I planeswalked away just as the pyroclastic flow was about to slam into me. Well played for a colorful little bird.
Tomorrow, let’s try something unexpected.
Can DEFLECTING PALM prevent the damage done by the SCAPESHIFT combo?
Deflecting Palm would only affect the damage from a single Valakut trigger, but that can still be useful if it’s the difference between losing the game or not.
