📖 ‘Wuthering Heights’ written by Emily Bronte under the pseudonym of Ellis Bell was written between October 1845 and June 1846, it was published in 1847. Her only novel, the story was considered controversial during its inception due to the lurid depictions of cruelty, religious hypocrisy, gender inequality, and social class, between the two chief characters of Cathy and Heathcliff, and the destructive effects of jealousy and vengefulness between them. The story highlighted the underbelly of a Victorian society which shielded itself behind strict ideals of perceived morality, while the industrial revolution created a hidden veil to mask the disease, death and deprivation which ran unchecked throughout the Victorian period. Dying a year after the book’s publication, at the age of 30, believing that the work had been a failure, her health deteriorated rapidly, due to her ongoing tuberculosis, (named consumption at the time), the harsh winter, and the contamination of water in her house through run off from the church's graveyard; which not only sickened her but also her brothers and sisters. Three of the characters in the story, Francis, Edgar, and Linton die from consumption, and the story describes their symptoms with acute medical detail, drawn from her own worsening health. Tuberculosis would also end the lives of her sister Anne, and her Brother Branwell, by 1849.
