Inventó el transmisor de ilusión, por el que recibió una patente en 1980.​ Experimentó con espejos planos y cóncavos para mejorar el video y la televisión. Los espejos planos tendrían un reflejo en cierto objeto que parecería estar detrás del vidrio. El espejo cóncavo tendría un reflejo que en realidad estaría frente al vidrio, produciendo una ilusión tridimensional. Thomas creó el transmisor de ilusiones: una herramienta que usa dos espejos cóncavos y rayos de luz para producir ilusiones ópticas. Al ser un proceso costoso y que requiere tiempo decidió vender la tecnología a la NASA.
