On a thematic level, what is the political position of your book series?
Ultra leftist for 2010, meaning it’s a future where things like racism and lgbt discrimination are as unthinkable and in the past as the feudal system or inquisition. But it’s fragile af and could fall back into both if some mega conglomerate sells the wrong asset.
My biggest regret is that I treated fascism as another element of the past and religion as the threat that wrecks it all, when only a few years after publication, it was fascism using religion and not the other way around as I predicted.
It has plenty of mistakes and unwise bits, some bad cringe. I’ve changed a bit in 15 years. But the novels are as far left as I am, and I’m proud my first academic citation was for making fun of trump worshippers before it became such an overwhelming cruciality.
