Whew, but he was getting tired. His legs felt like waits and his vision blurred. How long had they been running? Too long. Heavy breathing was all he heard; his own, from how hard he had been trying. Eyes swept over the crowd in the stands for only a moment.
That’s when he caught her. There she was, cheering him on (in a somewhat embarrassing way), and through the heavy beating of his heart and his laden breaths, he heard her shouting over the masses with her booming voice.
And boy, if you’ve never seen a four foot eleven, fourteen year old half-dragon light up and reinvigorate, the crowd would that day. In moments his breath felt like fire and his exhaustion turned to determination. Suddenly, from his slow reverie, the child burst forward in an insane bout of speed and focus.
He’ll be damned if he can’t win now.
