Breathe on Me / Ezekiel 37
What image can convey desperate hopelessness and unlimited flourishing at the same time? I wanted to capture the potential for truly restored humanity in all its fullness, even after our individual and communal failure. Nothing can beat a valley of dry bones for the epitome of lifelessness. What is the antidote? According to Jewish prophet Ezekiel, only the breath of God.
So I made Breathe on Me.
It’s 25″ x 30.5″ and machine quilted. The bones are images printed on fabric with my inkjet printer and then dyed with tea to age the background. The breath of God can only be hinted at, but oh, how we still need it!
“Son of man, can these bones live? ... Thus says the Lord God to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. And...you shall know that I am the Lord.” Ezekiel 37:3-6

Feeling dry? Well, God can take that valley of dry bones and put life into them...y'all He will make them hear, create breath in them, put tendons and flesh to them; then brought them unity of function and purpose. He will make the dry bones live again!! . . How much God loves me that He took my broken, battered, beaten, dead bones and put a new breath to life, wrapping them in the skin of the Holy Spirit and flowed through me the cleansing blood of Christ! That is more than love, yes?! It is what a true Father does. Why?
