On International Women's Day, I received my Earth Ring from APEGA. I am so thrilled to be another step towards breaking stereotypes, and to my life goals, that I'd like to share just a few things:
As of today, women make up 14% of APEGA's membership, and 22% of those under 40. It's sad, and that makes it all the more important to me that I stood in front of my peers on that day -- my hair long and flowing, and my dress professional and feminine -- swearing my oath. My professor looked at me with nothing but pride, as he shook my hand, and I'll never forget the delirious happiness I felt as the silver Earth Ring took its place on my working hand.
By placing silver on rock, we reaffirm a sort of covenant with the earth, and our responsibility to care for it and the public we serve. Geoscientists are the intrepid explorers, and the persistent remediators. We are the liaison between people and the planet that supports them. It is my vision that, with the engineers, we work to sustain you, and your planet.
I'll always remember, and keep this near to my heart: "To you, we hand over all that lies beneath the Earth."
